Should the villain have been Lorca?

We do not.
I reckon he's dead but just for the sake of seeing Jason Isaacs in a similar but different role I'd want him to come back. But there's an element I guess of tragedy if he's just dead and had his life usurped by a doppelganger
Well, Isaacs is on record saying he would return to Trek as Prime Lorca, as long as it had “a great story to tell”. And I would love to see him as a guest star on Strange New Worlds. He seems to have a good relationship with Goldsman, so I guess there’s a non-zero chance it might actually happen. 
Most likely not. They switched places mere seconds before the Buran(?) was blown up. Where could he go?
For what it's worth, the novel Drastic Measures does end with an epilogue set in a prison in the Mirror Universe where Prime Lorca is being held.
