Should the Sontarans come back?

The new series Daleks are excellent. Great design which doesn't depart too far from the original, shades of the Cushing film daleks with the jam jar eye lights and of the black and white era daleks with the eye-stalk iris. Top this off with the awesome voice acting of Nicholas Briggs, and you have daleks which are updated nicely, but every bit their old selves. Their spaceships even look the same, similar interior designs and they even make the same old 'heartbeat' sound effect.

I'd like to see some different coloured ones other than the gold, but hey I'm sure they'll get around to it..

It's a shame the writing in the new series hasn't always treated them equally as well.

I actually enjoy "Sontar-HA!" It was nice to see an actual Sontaran army, and armies do that sort of thing, I suppose.

What really made those Sontaran episodes work was Christopher Ryan. You could tell he just relished the part. I hope he comes back-- after all, he is a clone!

I'd love to see more Sontarans! And Rutons, I think you could do a lot with the shape changer elements and perhaps gloss over the fact they look like a ball of snot in their natural format...
Aw, come on! I love the Rutan's natural form. Their appearance was one of my fondest memories of Doctor Who as a kid.

Really? I always thought Fang Rock is almost ruined by it. A taut lighthosue under seige story, creepy fog, an eerie menace, then it's some glowing thing on the stairs

As long as they aren't doing that spasticated chanting whilst bathed in pink lighting, I wouldn't mind seeing them again.
Sontar-HA!

Yeah that was irksome.

I find the new Sontaran look a little offputting too, though I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it may be the battle armour - it just looks generic sci fi..

They should give them a bit of a makeover so to bring them back to the Lynx/Styre look of the classic series.

I actually didn't mind Sonta-hah! A damn sight better than Delete if nothing else, and it gave Rattigan a neat payoff at the end.

I do know what you mean about the new look. In many respects its brilliant, and frankly better looking than the Sontarans have been in years (in fact as I've said elsewhere the 2 parter is the best Sontaran story other than the Time Warrior). I think the problem with the armour is that it looks too bright and clean. I don't think the look needs much work, I'd just like to see it dirtied up and battered a bit more as befits a race in constant war!

I guess it's just me but between Horror of Fang Rock and Heavy Metal, I've always found green glowing orbs to be rather creepy and eerie.

Yeah. but the Cybermen say 'delete' whilst attacking. The Sontarans stood there chanting in front of no-one and looking like they needed to take a shit.

Whilst bathed in pink lighting.

Presumably because they knew how gay it was.

Should the Sontarans come back? Yes, if they've got a good story. Otherwise no. Same as all old enemies really. If you can do something new and interesting, you get Dalek. If you're just bringing them back for nostalgia's sake, you get Warriors Of The Deep.

Um, and the related novel Lords of the Storm, which was the MA that came out with the NA of Shakedown...

AKA the book that got me hooked on 'X-Wing'. I'd love to see a TV version of that, but suspect the effects budget couldn't quite stretch.

There are some of my favorite WHO aliens next to the Cybermen (who are better-looking--IMO--in the classic Who era). The Daleks are more ominous and formidable in the nuSeries, thanks to real-world technology...

The Cybermen from Tomb or Invasion certainly. Those ones were actually genuinely creepy looking. But I really don't get the love for those goofy looking 80s Cybermen. lol
