Should the Sarah Jane Adventures continue?

It is safe to say that Liz would want people to continue living their lives even though she is no longer with us. What better way than to continue SJA in some form and let the show continue to inspire children and open their young minds to endless possibilities. I am sure she would want that.

Nothing better than mind-readers speaking for the dead. Do you do lottery numbers as well?

i would like the completed episodes to be aired and the show to end.

if anything, bring Clyde, Luke or Rani - or even Maria back in Who, but that's all.

In my opinion, which isn't worth anything to most people here, it would be nice if they could do a story or create a new show in a few months or a year that mentioned that Sarah Jane Smith died of a sudden illness or accident and have someone come in to help the kids move on and continue. This would show the young fans of the show that people die and life goes on for the survivors.

As for it being too soon to talk about these things I am sure the BBC is having these very discussions right now since they have other people that are working on this show that need to know what the future holds for them.

This is similar to when John Ritter passed away a few years ago and ABC decided to continue on with his show 8 Simple Rules and it lasted two years after his death.

I'm kinda torn on this, honestly. I certainly think they should (and will) find a way to finish S5, but beyond that I just don't know. I'm not sure Clyde and Rani could carry a series on their own, at least not yet. But it will really depend on how S5 finishes up.

^ For the sake of argument, they do still have the Doctor (or Doctor Who if you prefer). Unless they're doing recasting/regenerating/something, Davros is rightly pointing out that there is no more Sarah Jane.

Right. And it can't be Doctor Who without William Hartnell. Right?

Or Taggart without Taggart. And probably other examples too numerous to mention. Given time, once Lis is respectfully and rightfully mourned, TPTB will find a way to continue her legacy for her young and new generation of fans...new name, new character, whatever but something that acknowledges her contribution to narrative...

I guess if the show had to continue on I'd make it something like "The Sarah Jane Adventure Club". The kids that were her companions have lost their mentor figure and now have to blossom on their own with everything they've learned.

Kinda the point of my post. This is the Whoverse after all, and strange occurrences aren't strange at all.

Dr Who continues because they recast the role, over and over and over again, and even created a fictional device to explain differences in appearances and personalities. Figuring a way to apply this same device to another character in the same universe (even though that character is not a Timelord) would be child's play.

Sure, you wouldn't want to do it right away, out of respect for the dearly departed. Fortunately, in this case we have a respectable number of completed episodes to air as a series this year, so the new Sarah Jane, or analog thereof, would put in her first appearance, well over a year from now, which seems more than adequate a period of mourning.

Well, at risk of sounding like a broken record, no. Keeping the show going without Sarah would be saying that the character is gone as well as the actress. And in my mind, Sarah Jane will be protecting the Earth for at least another decade or two.

I like the idea of having the younger cast members turn up on DW at some point though. Maybe in series 6?

OmahaStar, you are indeed disrespectful of your betters. This thread is a perfect tribute to Ms. Sladen. As everyone who's ever worked on stage or screen knows, the show must go on. As others have pointed out, Ms. Sladen would surely have been concerned at the effect of her passing on the employment of her castmates and crew. These speculations are in the best tradition of the actor's creed.

Sad irony that Lis Sladen's presumed desire for her colleagues to continue in employment was the gravitas and class this thread already possessed. A shame that some people have to ruin such a dignified discussion by casting aspersions on others by assuming THEY had disresepct for the dearly departed Ms Sladen.

There's only three ways the show could possibly continue. Recast Sarah Jane, rename the show and focus on the kids, or pull a Perry Mason (i.e. always out of town and one sided phone calls). I can't really see them recasting her because Sladen is and will always be Sarah Jane. Renaming it and focusing on the kids probably wouldn't last to long because the kids quite frankly aren't that interesting. And pulling a Perry Mason would just be a lame and hollow way to continue the show and milk a few more quid out of the Sarah Jane name without actually having Sarah Jane in it.

I'd say just let the show go. It had a decent run with four (five if the BBC decide to air the last few episodes she did film) series.

So, Tulin, before you go casting stones, you might want to go back and look at OmahaStar's post. Note carefully how instead of a rank under his name he features the phrase "Disrespectful of his Betters." I was merely affirming his own assertion. Had he not featured this as part of his board ID, I would have simply said that I disagreed with him. But as it is, he's adopted this personna and I'm responding to it. Also, I haven't noticed anyone else descending to profanity in this thread except him. QED.

The name of the show is Sarah Jane Adventures. She is dead, the show needs to end.

If they filmed the episodes awesome, show them, and end the show. From what I have read the children were moving on, and the world needs to too.

If there are any chacters that people like then have a new spinoff or special to tie up lose ends.

A Time Lord played for four years by one man can indeed regenerate. A human woman played for nearly forty years by the same woman cannot be recast.

I never even watched the show, but I say let it continue if the people involved want to find a way and there's support for it. Rename the show if need be.
