Should the Picard Show ignore ST-2009 destruction of Romulus?

Should the Picard Show ignore Romulus destination from ST-2009

  • Yes - a nice attempt to tie the reboot to prime, but keep it part of the Kelvinverse future

...Naturally, since time travel was involved, and indeed seemed to be integral to what Spock was doing (supernova is to be stopped by red matter, red matter creates timeholes), we need not assume that there are only two timelines, or that any one thing really happened and wasn't made to unhappen immediately therebefore. Perhaps Spock tried to fix Romulus by going back in time, and in fact succeeded, or got a partial result out of that, or something?

TPTB have kept the trailers so far free of explicit references to what really happened to Romulus or the Romulans - deliberately, no doubt, although not necessarily because there's a whopper there waiting for us. A story built around Romulus exploding as shown is epic and intriguing enough. One with an additional twist need not be superior. But it need not be inferior, either.

I'm glad to hear Jeri will be in 3 shows of Picard. I've been curious to find out what Seven of nine has been doing since Voyager returned to earth .

What @F. King Daniel said. The supernova occurred in the Prime timeline, where Nimoy Spock is from, and why he felt responsible.
They could retcon that and say that Nimoy Spock came from the Kelvin timeline's future or a third universe (the '09 countdown comic reality for example). They won't but technically there's nothing in the the JJ movies that confirms Nimoy Spock was from prime, just a univese that was similar enough to it to have the movie era crew look like the one we know.

Isn’t he listed in the credits as “Prime Spock?”

The whole point of having Nimoy in the film was that Prime Spock and Nero inadvertently changed things to create this nuUniverse, and I’m pretty sure they meant for him to be the same guy from TOS. Plus, the TUC cast photo that Prime Spock had...

That defeats the entire purpose of the character.

There is evidence he's from the Prime universe: the picture of the crew from STV that is given to nuSpock at the end of Beyond.

Oops: said the exact same thing as Dukhat.

Yes, Romulus actually blew up in "our" beloved universe. We need to acknowledge it and move on. We already know that Romulans will feature in this show somehow. Or just one of their ships? I've been trying not to read too many spoilers. I guess we'll see if the destruction of their home world gets a mention.

I'm 110% certain we'll hear about it. While only pseudo-canon, the Countdown to Picard comics are written by the show writers, and it's front and center there. Although the minor events of the comic might not carry over, I think it's fairly certain the supernova will (just as it was the only canon element of the original Countdown series and ST'09).

Indeed, and it's because of that the name "Prime Universe" even exists. So it would be very odd indeed to suddenly reveal Nimoy Spock from Trek XI is not in fact from the Prime Universe. Then it has to be explained why he's called Spock Prime in the credits.

I've never looked at the credits.:rommie:
But of course he's intended to be prime Spock, I'm just saying they COULD easily retcon it, not that they should or that I even want it. I want to see the aftermath of Romulus destruction, it has the potential to be really interesting.

The picture of the TUC crew isn't technically proof (see TNG's Parallels were some alternate realities only had a different cake), there could be thousands of non prime universes out there where the exact same picture was taken, just saying.;)

They could retcon the entire series of TNG by making it Wesley's dream, but they won't.

I may not like the destruction of Romulus but I am a huge fan of exploring consequences. And this is a big consequence to explore.
Nah, I see it as a dead end.

It's just a crazy and unnecessary scenario.

I have a feeling that sooner or later they’ll try some sort of nostalgia-based course correction (“How can you have Star Trek without Romulus?”), if only by introducing “New Romulus” (analogous to New Vulcan) that would then be shortened in dialogue to just ”Romulus”.

Discovery season 3 will likely clue us in as to the loooooooong term fallout of the hobus supernova.
