Should the next Star Trek movie go to streaming?

I don't know if anyone has been keeping up with entertainment news, but Warner Bros is having its entire slate of movies in 2021 to HBO Max and theatres at the same time:

Also we have seen some big movies go directly to streaming, something like Irishmen got picked up by Netflix, and Sony decided to sell this He-Man movie they were making to Netflix at a certain point.

It looks like the movie landscape is chaning. So should the next Star Trek movie go to streaming?

Yeah, but it won't be big budget like the last three. It'll be a Long Treks, made by the CBS-AA/P+ Trek people and it'll air on there.

A made-for-TV movie, like when a Berman-era 2-parter was repackaged as a movie.

Maybe Picard s2 (or 3) will end up becoming a $100m 2hr Berman-era crossover Long Trek movie. something like the 5th TNG crossover movie was going to be but now with some added Discoverse (Pike/Enterprise) and Kelvinverse (just Quinto)

I don't recall any TNG episodes repackaged as movies. I do, however, remember when they'd splice together two episodes of Battlestar Galactica (the original) to make a TV movie. Sometimes the episodes were two-parters, other times they were completely unrelated. One such "movie" even melded Galactica 1980's "The Return of Starbuck" with one of the original series episodes.

The situation with Warner Bros. and some other studios is dictated mainly by the COVID pandemic and its pretty much disastrous impact on the box office. They believe--and likely correctly so--that there will still be fewer movie theaters open and correspondingly fewer movie goers throughout all of 2021. Streaming is the logical way for the studios to compensate for that loss of revenue, but it still won't quite be the same as the business models for the big screen and the small screen/streaming device don't mirror each other at all. IMO, some of these big-budget theatrical movies now headed for streaming are going to be in the red for awhile as it will take longer for them than normal to turn a profit, or in some cases, to just break even.

If the next Trek movie is slated for streaming, it'd better be set up for that from the get-go.

What I've seen from CBSAA they're already making streaming movies, DISCO and PICARD, but they're divided into a serial format. The budgets are huge for these series and looks pretty cinematic, CBS has already been there. Enjoy!

I saw Bill & Ted Face the Music online. Spent $20 for it. And I thought that was too much to watch from my home. I did it anyway, but I wasn't too crazy about it.

I think after a certain point, people aren't going to want to spend that much to watch a movie when it's released. Maybe once or twice, but not on a regular basis. This is just a quick-fix during the Pandemic. If it's not a quick-fix, then the studios and investors should re-evaluate the way they put money into these things.

Nah think of the expense and hassle of trying to keep up with the various streaming services.
I still haven’t seen Picard or this Lower decks programme so no,enough already.

If they can't get a decent streaming deal for it - and recent history suggests that's a real problem - then it's hard to see it paying off.

I think the idea would be to promote traffic to the new Paramount + site, rather than sell it to another company. That is what Warner Bros is doing by putting its movies on HBO Max as they are released in theatres.

In light of the news that WW84 will be streamed as well as released in theatres in the US, and the previous streaming experiments with Tenet and Mulan this past year, I can see a Star Trek film being streamed in the near future.

Whether the studio will simply stream the film, or do a combo of streaming and theatre release, remains to be seen.

But we already have what you wanted on CBSALLACCESS, these streaming series are cinematic quality and feel like movies.

Best chance we've got now of a Star Trek "movie" is probably getting one produced for CBS All Access/Paramount+. I'll be a while before cinema has recovered to make a traditional project feasible. Considering the last movie barely made any money back they're in no rush.

The Star Trek schedule looks pretty much full for the next couple of years in any case so unless they get an idea to do a story that can only be told in movie format I doubt we'll be seeing one for a while.

Personally in light of what Star Trek is already streaming, I'd wait until the pandemic is over and people start returning to the theatre (whenever that is).

Do you really believe people will return to Theatres? If so, Theatres will have to change their designs for their rooms; 6 feet apart, inputting no wifi connection so audiences don't look and text on their cell phones during a movie. Clean the rooms better by sanitizing the chairs, arm rails, and floors after every viewing. Sound rooms need to have certification where each channel is distinctive and isn't blasting in one large noise frame. As for the movies themselves, there need to include the final credits while the movie is ending. I hate those overly long credit sequences, as soon as the movie is done I am out, even if it's a Marvel ending. I don't care. I wouldn't mind a compromise and have all those long credits at the start of the movie... just put them all out and then start the movie. There has to be some evolution to the theatre experience for audiences to return because movies are just fine in the comfort of my own home in my home theater system.

Maybe, if they are still around. Certainly I would.

The only theaters I have been in in the area have blocked signals. I know there are theaters down in LA that are built like Faraday cages to ensure no signals whatsoever.

Hopefully normality will be resumed, when COVID is be reduced to the same threat level as seasonal flu... because it's not healthy to live like this. And I say that as somebody who's always been an introvert who tends to feel social anxiety a lot. Human nature is what it is though. You only have to look at all those irresponsible people rushing for the next train out of town, with 6 hours until the Tier 4 lockdowns take effect, to see how people will still say to hell with the risk of being in crowded places, when the desire is strong enough.

I just discovered England has a second strain of Covid, this pandemic is here to stay for little while longer. This news will only hurt theatres more. Another thing movie screening are too expensive IMO and the foods and snacks are inflated, and also, movies have not been worth the price of admission. I thought I would enjoy the movie more if I didn't pay so much for a ticket, I mean my BF pays most of the time but... I felt after watching the movie we could've used that money for something more fulfilling than what we saw.

Going to the theater is a once a year thing with me and my dad. Always worth it for the time spent for us.
