Should the new Enterprise have MACOS onboard?

Yevetha

Commodore
It would makes sense, they cannot handle everything with just an away team and the MACOs futuristic look would fit nicely with the new Trek.

I don't know... I kind of liked the fact that the protagonists in TOS solved their problems without the need for an army.

Even if TOS had the budget to have a specialized armed fighting force like the MACOS (i.e., one that is more army-like than the redshirt security crew members), I would probably still prefer the main protagonists to do most of the work themselves, as was usually the case in TOS.

I would think if the ship has a small army of MACOS, then every plot point that required a show of force would need to be handled by that army (if not, then what would be the point of having them?). However, problem-solving in Star Trek is not about using armies.

I suppose my short answer would simply be "It's not the Star Trek way of doing things".

I imagine that the MACOs integrated into Starfleet when the Federation was formed. Any security officers probably received the same training.

Believe it or not, Roddenberry originally wanted the Enterprise to have a Marine detachment on board. Remember, Starfleet was origianlly concieved as "the Navy in space." The whole "Starfleet isn't a military, it's for peaceful exploration only" didn't start until TNG.

For some reason, this never went through and the closest we ever got were the above mentioned Starfleet officers in blue shirts in Trek V which behind the scenes sources identify as Marines despite nothing being mentioned on screen.

I doubt we'll see Marine or MACOs in Trek XII, but their presence would not be un-Trek like at all.

This. Having the Senior Bridge Officers doing all the legwork may not be realistic but it is Star Trek's way.

We could just have Kirk and MCcoy having the habit of beaming down with a MACOs and the specialist that is required at that mission.

There should be marines, yes. But I would show them not as MACOs, but as Starfleet marines. With uniforms identical to the TOS styling but black in color.

^ It's not that hard. Think of a uniform that looks like the TOS unis we're familiar with, only in a different actual color (black).

They couldn't figure out how to use the MACO's on Enterprise. Why introduce them in Abrams Trek?

They could take the place of rdshirts on ground missions. Besides in the 21.century i want to see bigger guns instead of phase-pistol fights.

MACOs were introduced in the middle of ENT, thats why they did not know how to use them.

Black uniforms look cool, IMHO.

What other color would you suggest?

Starfleet uniforms have bright-colored tunics.

They've used the three primary colors. Pretty much leaves green or some mixture like orange or purple. So, green.

MACOs were introduced in the middle of ENT, thats why they did not know how to use them.

Because other Trek shows understand warfare and tactics? You couldn't prove it by, say, DS9.
