Should The Horta make an appearance?

I'm going to say "no" to this proposal for SNW purposes.

For PIC, LDS, DSC and PRO purposes, though, I'd say "yes".

Yeah definitely. I think it would be great to see a Horta in a current production. The timing for SNW just doesn't work and they'd have to contrive yet some other plot device to explain it away, which gets really old after a while.

But for any of the other shows that take place after "The Devil in the Dark?" Absolutely.

Devil in the dark will always be my favorite episode of TOS but I’m surprised Star Trek has never brought back this alien species with a new more modern design. Would anyone else enjoy an appearance of the Horta in SNW? I can see them keeping the colors and the shape but the texture of its silicone skin will look more real and less “propy”.

No, because during this timeframe there is only ONE Horta, the mother guarding the eggs as they near hatching at the end of a thirty millenia cycle. First Contact was made by Spock in TOS. So, NO.

IMO, the Horta needs to be entirely unfamiliar when it appears in Devil In the Dark. Otherwise, the story loses a lot.

The Federation does not come off terribly well in "Devil In The Dark." Kirk's brief here is very much in the spirit of a colonial empire.

It matters for the writers.

No. All that matters for the writers is that they write a good story. ‘Canon’ and continuity with a 55 year old show shouldn’t take precedence over that. And from what I’ve seen, it clearly doesn’t.
