Should The Eleventh Doctor Cut A Hand Off?

Just thinking, back in The Christmas Invasion, the Tenth Doctor got his hand chopped off, but it grew back since he was within 15 hours of regeneration. That severed hand would later play an important part in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End by absorbing his regeneration energy and therefore prevent regeneration from completing. Of course, that led to the creation of a clone, but that's beside the point.

So, then it would seem obvious that having just regenerated, the Eleventh Doctor should cut his hand off, have it grow back because it's within 15 hours of regeneration, and then keep the severed hand somewhere safely. That way there, should he ever be mortally wounded, he can stave off regeneration by having it absorb the energy. Of course, he could also end up with a clone as well, but that's beside the point.

No sense in tempting fate. If he did it, he'd probably end up getting shot two hours later, and he'd have exhausted his spare regenerative energy, and it'd be too soon for him to do it again.

That's why it was a stupid thing to write in, firstly for a brief silly moment in The Christmas Invasion, and then for an utterly stupid cliffhanger for Journey's End. I really wonder if RTD ever considered the wider consequences of these things.

Maybe the process is dangerous, maybe it doesn't always work and the hand doesn't always grow back. Maybe the extra appendage can be used to control a Time Lord voodoo-like.

Sorry, but that idea sounds fanwanky and unoriginal. It's been done already so leave it at that.

Exactly, plus he's likely not keen on the idea of what happened to Donna happening to anyone else, and unless he keeps the hand somewhere locked away in the TARDIS (in which case it's hardly convenient to get to if he needs to avert a regeneration...), then chances are a human might be close enough to trigger another metacrisis.

The guy's writing an action adventure story, not the Bible. Come on, people.

And in answer to the question, maybe the Doctor's the first one to think of it - he is quite brilliant. And if anyone could tell me the episode in which it was ever stated that Time Lords DON'T do this all the time, I'd be very interested! Just because the Doctor regenerated away from Gallifrey where Time Lord Doctors couldn't attend to him and "take a reserve" that doesn't mean Rassilon or Borusa or any of the others didn't do just that.
