I recently came across an article suggesting that The Walking Dead could run for 20 seasons. But I don't think that is realistic. Yes, shows like Law and Order and Doctor Who have gone for 20 seasons and more. But they are not as serialized as The Walking Dead. There is a limit to how much a show like that can stay in motion before it reaches the end of the road. I think the end is near for The Walking Dead. It looks like Season 7 is going to end with the start of the war against Negan and perhaps the entire eighth season is going to cover that war. It would be a hell of a high note for the show to go out on.

Thoughts?

It will stay on the air as long as the viewership justifies it. The cast is mostly rotating through every few years and due to the lack of an overarching arc/plot even the main characters are expendable, so their talent budget is probably fairly low compared to most dramas. I gave up on it a few years ago though.

Should it? No. It'll end when the viewers go away. Until then let the people who do watch it keep doing so.

Yes, The Walking Dead should end ASAP, if only to spite its Trump voter fans who seem to view a zombie apocalypse as genuinely preferable to an increasingly diverse and tech-driven meritocratic economy in which states that discriminate against the LGBTQ are punished with lost contracts and fall ever more behind, though their unbreakable overrepresentation in the Senate nevertheless allows them to royally f*** things up for the rest of the nation.

... And also because it's a dumb show that doesn't hold a candle to The Last Ship, an equally silly but actually exciting series with (gasp!) narrative progression, (horrors!) distinct storylines in various locales, and which (noooo!) isn't an exercise in viewer-punishing nihilism. USA! US Navy! USA! :p :bolian:

It is starting to drag, I haven't watched any of the newer episodes.

I really enjoy Negan, but I'm really bored of the rest of the characters and since Negan wasn't in the first two episodes I haven't watched. But it is still popular so not ending any time soon...

They way things are going, we clearly will not see a war going on this season. SO season 8 will be focused on that. (And perhaps the aftermath... what will the new Scavengers do , for example).

They need to plot out for their last season where the group gets in contact with what seems to be a stable society, stretching from the oil fields in North Dakota, going down the pike, where civilization is reconstructing, with new gasoline produced, different fruits & vegetables being traded, communities rebuilding.

Have Rick & company highly suspicious of it...perhaps have some adventures that make them doubt. But by the end, they get connected to the Morales family, surviving Vatos, survivors from Woodbury, terminus & the Prison and realize they finally have a home. so a little bit of a repeat with first coming to Alexandria...but with a civilization actually adapting.

Or , to add drama (and time), have the 2nd to last season be the death of Rick, and all the implications that come from it.
