Should Picard's name be mentioned in Star Trek XI?

The Rock

Assuming the story takes place after Nemesis, should Picard's name (or at least the Enterprise-E) be mentioned in the movie at all? Since we all know no one from the recent Trek series (TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT) will be in the movie, shouldn't at least a passing mention be made of Picard and his Enterprise to let the audience know what timeframe the story is set in? Since fans of TNG will never get another TNG movie at this point, do you think this would be the next best thing?

They wouldn't even have to show Picard or the Enterprise-E at all. Just a brief mention would be fine, to let everyone know that Picard is still out there in the 24th century exploring the galaxy. :)

I think that if it takes place before TOS, Kirk should be nailing some lab hottie named Janine Picard. Unbeknownst to him, her father is Admiral Rene Picard - Kirk doesn't make the connection because three centuries from now Picard is as common a surname as "Smith" is in the United States (also because at this age his blood pressure above the waist is in negative digits).

Sadly, his first love is killed in the destruction of the experimental superdreadnaught U.S.S. Le Grande Picard.

Yeah I think it would be cool to make some passing refrence to Picard and Co. They could easily do it in a way that didn't get in the way but for those fans that care would notice.

It's a little-known fact that Phillipe Picard is the man who designed the Constitution class starship. We'll see a hundred foot-tall holographic recording of him at the launching of the Enterprise.

Someone in the crowd will remark "this is so moving - it reminds me of the stories my great-uncle Travis tells about the Cochrane memorial at the launching of the first great Enterprise NX-01, commanded by first Federation President Jonathan Archer!"

"Oui, I was named for him," replies young Ensign Jonathan Sato-Picard.

Pic-who?

Picard. You know, the guy who saved everyone after Kirk fell off a bridge and died.

Oh, the bald guy who just wasn't clever enough to simply exit the Nexus two weeks earlier than he chose to do so and thereby save the space observatory and its crew from Romulan attack, spare the crash of the Ent-D, safely and harmlessly arrest the villan for trafficking in a controlled substance, prevent his beloved nephew from dying in a fire while at the same time rescuing a legendary figure of history from a sort of living purgatory?

THAT Picard?

Yeah - the one who traveled into the past and saved the human race from being wiped out by the Borg in Cochrane's time so L'il Jimmy Kirk could get born.

That guy.

I can do this as long as you can. Welcome to the freakin' Internets.

Yeah, but I don't have any particular quarrel with "First Contact". In fact I rather liked that Picard . . .

The Picard you first cited in "Generations" though, HE was a frickin' idiot.

Anyhow, if Kirk hadn't beaten up Soren and saved Picard from getting his own ass kicked by him a second time then Picard never would have survived to travel into the past and fight the Borg etc etc and so on and so on and scooby-dooby-dooby . . .

Preach it brother!

Maybe they can just have a character named Chakotay-Luc "Trip" Tiberius Sisko III to get all five shows mentioned. :)

Back to the topic...

Perhaps the movie opens 20 years after the events in NEM with Admiral Picard and Ambassador Spock at the event in which the Romulans are being admitted into the UFP. While Spock melded with Picard years before, it was a brief glimpse into Spock's long life. During that meld, Picard felt the connection that Spock had with Kirk and then, years later during the nexus encounter, Jean-Luc actually met Kirk. For years he has wanted to know so much more about the man, not just the legend that history recorded. So, during the Romulan induction ceremony, Picard takes the Ambassador to a private corner and asks him to tell him more. The Vulcan obliges and the flashback story begins. As the tale ends, we come back to the present (the early 25th c.), Spock asks Picard if he will share with him the moments he had with Kirk on Veridian III. Of course, Picard obliges. We see a short montage from GEN in which Kirk and Picard fight Soran and Jim gets mortally wounded and dies ("Oh, my!"). After this brief yet emotional meld that causes them each to simultaneously shed a tear, they go their separate ways both the richer for the experience.

I think it would depend on how much farther Star Trek XI is in the future from Nemesis. After five to twenty years, it is very likely that Picard (and any children he might have) would be very much still alive, as well as Riker, or LaForge, Reg Barkley, Janeway, Paris, Tuvok, or especially B4, who has all of Data's memories. I don't think that Star Fleet would wait 100 to 200 years before they designed the next model of Star Fleet's flagship called Enterprise. So, if it's relatively soon after the Nemesis incident, then I would say why not mention Picard, others from TNG, Voyager, or Nemesis.

The problem I have with all these "mentions" is the same problem I have with people saying that "all the stories in an era have been told."

This is a BIG GALAXY. Yet somehow people assume that they've seen it all, and that everyone knows everyone else...

If a character BELONGS there (say, if we're talking pre-TOS and we need to see Kirk's best friend, we should see him as the character already established as such)... use him or her. But unless there's a REASON to have a character... and by "reason" I don't mean "becuz it would be KEWL"... leave 'em alone. I'm sure that Picard will still be alive and kicking by the time that the "bookend" sequence in this movie is shown (though he'd be gumming his babyfood at this point I'm sure!). Not showing him doesn't mean he's GONE. Just that he has better things to do with his time that fulfill fanboy fantasies. ;)
