Well, I don't think it was ever said that this should be administered surreptitiously. It's more likely that the victims would be henpecked into using it.

Ah. I was under the impression that this was something being administered without the knowledge or permission of the recipient. If that is not the case, then my mistake.

Yeah, if things in the body always worked in harmony, we'd never need drugs of any kind.
However the OCP & HRT over-ride the body's natural programming, not correct problems like treatment for diabetes or anti-hypertensives do.

I think we have a tendency to believe that what the body does naturally--such as going through menopause--shouldn't be countered, because there must be a purpose to it. But that isn't really true.

We're products of evolution, our current state being the result of millions of years and trial and error. Our bodies are not perfect by any means. They screw up a lot. Menopause is just one of those screwups that will happen to anyone of the female persuasion. Women go through menopause because they're only born with so many eggs. The number was sufficient for the majority of human history--most women would die well before reaching menopause--but now most women live long enough to run out of eggs and go through the hormonal changes of menopause. Likewise, the quality of one's eggs declines as you get older. None of this is part of some grand design, but rather artifacts of our evolutionary history.

In short, we shouldn't avoid doing something just because the body doesn't do it naturally. We should definitely understand why the body does what it does, and be reasonably certain however we combat it is effective and with minimal side effects. But just because something is "unnatural" doesn't mean we shouldn't do it or that someone can't be better off for using it.

That is not to say HRT is a great idea, as there are studies indicating it causes various problems. But there are other remedies women use to treat the symptoms of menopause, too. Just because it is a natural process doesn't mean women should have to suffer through it unaided.

Thank you a) for telling us about our bodies because we didn't know and b) for letting us know you don't think we should suffer because we weren't sure.

Which is just as unfortunate, really. Whether it be a trick, or a threat, it indicates a lack of trust.

Robertmaxwell,

I come from a line of women who on average, reach 85yo (including my great great grandmother born in 1865).

Oh yeah, when you're a 49yo woman who has at various stages of your reproductive life taken these hormones, had any, some or many of the side effects, then you can speak on the subject.

My response wasn't directed at you, in case you didn't notice.

Yeah, whatever. Thanks for failing to address anything I said. Bye-bye now.

What have I failed to address?

Human females living 30-40 years past their childbearing is not a new phenomenon is the point that I was making. The medicalization of this process is.
Menopause as a screwup? Certainly wasn't described that way in any my classes. It was referred to as a natural part of the aging process.
BTW: Thanks for explaining menopause to me, being a 49yo woman, - I had no idea what it is that I'm currently living through...

Yeah, well, maybe you should chill out, because I wasn't even getting confrontational with you, and you decided to get shitty.

Women living past childbearing age is a new development, in terms of our species' development. For most of human history, women didn't live that long. It's a circumstance that our evolution never had to account for.

In fact, we're fortunate women outlive their fertility at all, since most species die once the ability to reproduce is gone.

I never claimed to know what symptoms you are going through or anything like that. I also never said it was unnatural. All I have said is that just because a process is natural doesn't mean it is correct or the best thing for your overall survival and quality of life. If you are dealing well with menopause, then good on you and I hope you find it an overall positive experience.

Why you chose to get so combative about this, I don't know. I wasn't attacking you or making light of what you're going through.

Why ya'll jumping down his throat? Everything he said was accurate.

And before anyone pulls the "when you're a woman" shit let me inform you that men, too, go through a stage similar to menopause but it is not at a specific time like it is for women.

Well, I don't think it was ever said that this should be administered surreptitiously. It's more likely that the victims would be henpecked into using it.
Wouldn't that indicate that there was no need to use it then?
People take all sorts of drugs and medications because they're not happy with what they're feeling. Sometimes it's appropriate and sometimes it's not. I don't see any difference with this particular substance.

Which is just as unfortunate, really. Whether it be a trick, or a threat, it indicates a lack of trust.
Welcome to the world of relationships. :rommie:

I don't get it, either. He was absolutely right.
