Should NuSulu be gay?

If there were any gay characters i would want them to be original valuable characters in of themselves, not just thrown in for the hell of it. Their sexuality...should be incidental, and the characters shouldn't bat an eyelid or make a big deal out of it.

I nominate Cupcake to be gay lol. Of all the random people on the Enterprise, he's has the most "screentime".

I wouldn't mind Sulu being gay, but he did have a daughter in Generations.

In terms of attractiveness, I'd choose either Kirk or McCoy. I don't see much point in making a minor character gay. If Star Trek has a gay character, it should be someone important. I'd like Pike to be gay in the sequel. He's a great man and would be a great role model for gays, not that they need one.

Besides, if a Star Trek character was made gay, Paramount would make more money than lose it. That is to say, they'd gain more fans than they'd lose.

I like the idea about Pike... :)

Pike is almost certain to be a far less significant character than Sulu in any future productions, if he's around at all.

I think Cupcake should be Ensign Redshirt in the next film. Send him down to a planet and have him get eaten by monster or something...

Anyway, how about not making sex the focus of the characters? That's my vote. I'd prefer to see Trek remain family entertainment...and one without an agenda on sexual orientation.

Why does everything now days always have to keep coming back to who is gay? You know for people who want to be accepted as part of the mainstream, gays sure keep calling attention to their orientation. By this, it makes them seem unlike everyone else.

Why is that? Who cares!

As for Pike, my take is he's a family man in the traditional sense -- obviously infused with traditional values of hard work, dedication and loyalty.

NuSulu can be gay or not, but in the next movie, Star Trek: The Nekkid Now, when they show Sulu all shirtless and oiled up, brandishing a sword, he better be wearing some tight leather pants. ;)

Oh what the hell for?

Having a gay member of the crew acknowledges the diversity that exists in humanity, IDIC and all that. Dramatically it provides an additional point of differentiation between the various crew and could undoubtedly be employed to create amusing scenes or exchanges of dialogue. There's no reason not to do it, it's not like the film was at all coy regarding the sexuality of various other crewmembers.
It is family entertainment after all and having a gay crewmember will undermine the entertainment value of it all. Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with it. But ultra-right-winger parents or hypocritical liberals might.

I think this would be a bad idea. In ST: TOS there were at least one instance where he was flirting with women. Plus in ST:GEN he had a daughter which judging by the fact that she is of asian descent plus the various things she said, suggest that she was a biological daughter.

actually Sulu and Rand were the very epitome of women and their friendships with gay males :p

I don't feel good posting in this thread. I think I might get into serious trouble! ;)

I've seen it brought up on other threads for possible future plot points, and I have to say, I really like the idea. Not just as a homage to George Takei, but in the progressive spirit of Gene Rodenberry and the original Star Trek. If the crew of the Enterprise is meant to represent all the people of earth, there's no reason they should all be straight.

I agree with Gene Roddenberry that sexual orientation of specific characters should not be addressed, and should be viewed as a non-issue. I'd like to see his wishes honored.

Also, I don't think Abrams is in the business of alienating fans for the sake of a moral dilemma. The franchise needs $$$, and a gay Sulu won't help that cause imo.

How many times does it need to be stated?

Just because someone has a daughter, does not mean they are heterosexual.

It's not moral dilemma, it's a representation of life.

He didn't have a problem putting a gay kiss or two on Lost.

My vote goes to Pike, or new incarnations of Lt. Kyle or Kevin Reilly.

Also, I have it on good authority Captain Robau and Ayel were both gay.

It might be a refreshing change in American TV and cinema to have an East Asian male strongly heterosexual first before we immediately go to the gay thing. That's relatively rare. So would be said male with a non-Asian female.

I'm still all for gay Spock and McCoy.

'Prime Sulu' having a daughter is not a strong enough argument against the idea of making changes to the character's sexuality in this new alternate timeline.

Mirror Sulu hitting on Uhura in Mirror Mirror would be though.

As 1701 mentioned and please keep it in mind, it is a family entertainment franchise. Why not keep it for every member of the family instead of some family members having to choose whether or not they want their child to see gay characters..I mean it is all over the place in TV, why not have something that is different and stands out as family entertainment instead of something where you will have to choose to see 2 men or 2 women kissing or worse...as it was pointed out, Gene did not see the point in addressing it so let's please keep to his vision and thoughts or just plain family entertainment status.
