Should I upgrade Ipods?

I've been thinking about this lately, and the Ipod I have is a 3-4 GB Nano (Second generation) and I have more songs now than I can fit on the thing. Hate to pay 200 for a new one but I'm wondering if I should. I can always bring new stuff into it and out again, but I just wonder if I should get something with bigger memory. I wish Apple would do what computers can do, which is just install a newer chip and gain more memory.

I'd go with the Touch if you can afford it. I'd have one, except the largest capacity Touch doesn't have enough space for all my music so I'm sticking with my Classic.

They do overprice by a large margin, but if you want to stick with them and gain more capacity, I guess you've got no choice. I once got an mp3 player for around £20 which had a 4 gig capacity total and a few other features ipods of the time didn't yet have... it was a German brand if I remember correctly. Plenty of other manufacturers do much more for less cash.

I think this is why I am starting to hate Apple a lot. If Microsoft has problems with security, than Apple has to be blamed for literally holding their consumers hostage in terms of what they can or can't get. I mean an 8 gig Ipod can go for over 200 bucks which is rediculous. Than you have the whole travesty with Itunes and the so called .69 cent songs and the 1.29 popular songs currently out (Which they reported) only to say that no we don't have any .69 cent songs ever and songs that came out 20 freaking years ago will now cost you 1.29. I really lost a ton of respect for Apple this year. Problem is I love the aspect of Itunes and being able to download stuff legally, but they pretty much sucked up to the industry, kissed their ass, and sold out to the consumer. And the problem is I think most people are still blinded by their products and stupid and rude "I'm a Mac" commercials.

Sorry for the rant.

Then don't get an iPod. There are plenty of other mp3 players on the market.

Are they compatible with Itunes though. That's where I buy all my music.

I don't know about that. I mean, 64 gigs of flash memory in something less that 1/4 inch thick isn't gonna be cheap.

I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't even get a profit from songs sold on the iTunes store.

^They probably don't, but to say something and then do something completely different (Where are all the .69 songs anyway) really rubs me the wrong way. Also, if I could get a different MP3 player and have it be compatible with Itunes, I would. Problem is at the time, it was great having Itunes and an Ipod and getting my music, then things change, and I don't think I can get a new MP3 player now.

Which you rather have? Them keep their word and loose half their available music because of greedy record labels who smelled blood, or realize that some things are beyond control.

If you don't have a sensative ear, you could always burn every ACC file you have than re-rip them as mp3s.

To be honest, something like we had when Itunes first came out. It's never going to happen, but to not place any blame on Apple (Even though most of it goes to the greedy bastards in the record industry) is delusional.

Anyway, back to the topic, is there like a 8 gig ipod nano for less than $150 or something. I'm not wanting to go all out, but 4 gigs isn't enough. Doubling it might be something worth doing.

8gig Nano for $150
16gig Nano for $180

Might be more worthwhile to plan for the future and go with the 16gig for only another $30

That actually isn't bad, at least considering the jacked up prices. Might be able to afford it.

Ok, what would you like to blame Apple for?

I know people rag on iPods, Apple, and iTunes a lot, but I have had nothing but good experiences with all. Perhaps there is a price premium, but you get what you pay for.

So here's where your complaints fall apart... you want to use Apple's software and store but don't want to use their hardware? There's plenty of other options for buying music online anyway. Your the one restricting yourself to Apple, not the other way around. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, but that's your decision and not theirs.

I've been thinking about this for quite a bit today (Sometimes saying it out loud and getting other viewpoints can do that), and I think 2 things really anger me about Apple when push comes to shove:

-Price. Why are things so expensive. I mean you get something, and then Jobs comes out saying there is something much much better. Ok, I get that, it's a tech thing and happens everywhere, but the price on some of the old school stuff is still quite high. I mean an 8 Gig Ipod Nano (Which all you really want is music) is 150 and 16 is 30 bucks more than that. With all the other stuff Apple brings out (Classic, Touch, Iphone) why is something so basic so much. I think a good price for it (trying to understand supply and demand here) would have been closer to the 100 dollar range, or a little over. We're getting up to $200 and that's just really high for that thing.

-Itunes. People question me wanting to stick with Itunes but getting another device that might be compatible. Well, I guess several years ago when I got my 4 gig Ipod I liked the whole concept of Itunes. I liked 99 cent songs, and getting gift cards to redeem at the store. It was downloading songs legally, and it seemed like a fair compromise. So here we are in 2009 when they say they are going to teird pricing of 69, 99, and 1.29 and say that songs currently will be 1.29 while most will stay at 99 and there will even be songs at .69. Well, how many songs have you found that cost .69 cents. Why are songs like Sweet Child o Mine, which came out in the mid 80's and cost 99 cents at one point now cost 1.29. Why is it that I can go to places like Amazon and they have a clear cut navigation system on what songs are priced where. They tell you what are the bargins, what are the high prices, and it's all labeled and very user friendly.

I guess what my point is is that I wish Apple would A) not hold their consumer hostage, and B) make things easier to find. How hard is it to have a link on Itunes saying here are the 69 cent songs like Amazon does. They have a very good model I think, and I actually would continue utlizing Itunes because it is a good software program, I just wish it was more user friendly. Also, I blame apple for the rude advertising campaign (I'm a Mac, I'm a PC) and I also think, and I mean this with no offense, a lot of apple supporters really get very defensive when it comes to Microsoft and what they bring out. Both companies have clear cut faults, and neither should get a free pass.

The 16 gig Nano is what subsidizes the 8 gig Nano. Flash memory is expensive. The 16 gig supports the existance of the 8 gig.

If you don't like it, just don't buy it, what's the issue?

^It goes back to my original question. I have 948 songs on Itunes now, and I subscribe to podcasts. I want to still keep that stuff, but I know a 4 gig just isn't enough anymore. I guess in the long run it's not really that much (And 16 gigs is good for at least a few years). Also, I am wondering why can't I just upgrade my current ipod via a chip or something. I guess it wasn't designed for that kind of thing, but you can add memory to a computer, it shouldn't be that different with something like an Ipod. Of course I don't really know the logistics of it, so I'm really just curious.

Dude, check it out:

1. Spend the money for a new iPod. Keep iTunes.
2. Buy a non-Apple music player, convert your files to MP3s. No iTunes this way, but it's cheaper.
3. Stick with what you have.

Pick one of the above.

This isn't a difficult situation.
