Her education would be about 290 years out of date, that's a loong time. Suppose we picked up a competent scientist from the 1730's, even if he or she were highly intelligent, they'd probably have to spend several years patching up their knowledge. He or she might be quite knowledgeable in specific fields but still miss knowledge in fields we'd consider to be fairly basic. For some scientific fields, the basic approach might have been revamped significantly.

But given that these whales were long extinct, they'd probably need her expertise right away, so I would expect she'd start following university courses on that vessel.

I'm liking the idea that Gillian is serving on a FNP ship. She'd be around the sea, which she obviously loves, and she'd get to oversee the reintroduction of humpback whales, which she knows more about than anyone else.
