Should Discovery kill off a character after Season 1?

I think any "main" character that isn't generating stories should get jettisoned, one way or the other. Get promoted, leave Starfleet, die. There was, what appeared to be, this weird cycle with Montgomery and Kim. It's like the writers couldn't figure out what to do with them, so didn't do anything much with them, so the audience didn't care for them, so they didn't write many episodes where they got the focus, because the audience didn't care for them, etc, etc. Because the actors were signed to long contracts those two just ended up sorta being.....there.

They should've written them out so that they could've brought in new characters who could generate stories. I was never the biggest 7 of 9 fan, but she was able to generate a lot of stories for VOY. One things I love about modern shows like GoT or Walking Dead is that anyone can die. They don't need to have the main characters accompanied by a no name, just introduced Redshirt who promptly gets killed in order to show us how dangerous the threat is.

True. Star Trek in the past has set up a roster of characters who 'have' to be regulars. Captain, first officer, helmsman, ops officer, tactical officer, blah blah blah. Even an ill defined position made up to put Spiner in a gold uniform instead of a blue one ('Ops') get carried forward to other shows. This leads to an over large ensemble and tends to lead to people who would in other shows fade away or be written out sticking around because they fill a seat on the bridge each week. Mayweather and Kim are the obvious examples, but there are others too where you wonder whether the show would have been the lesser without them.
My initial impression of Discovery is that they are casting differently, more of a mix of characters that the writers want than a ship's company by role. This might avoid this 'seat filler on regulars pay' issue. Roles on the ship that aren't regular characters will just be filled by recurring guests or extras, like the helm on TNG post Wesley.

And I certainly believe they will take on the current 'nobody is safe' mantra of TV drama. I hope it doesn't reach the gimicky levels of The Walking Dead where it's more true to say that it's surprising if somebody lives, or Game of Thrones where you can tell who the writers like best for the Iron Throne because they're the only ones who don't die. But the cast should not be indestructible. Injuries, diseases and deaths should be things which we see from time to time. I hope they don't do the obvious thing and kill off the captain to bring the lead to the centre seat, because I like the idea of a show focusing on someone other than the captain, but I suspect that will be on the cards at some point.

Been done already. If they want to try something truly risky they should kill off a crew member before Season 1.
Exactly.

Head of Destiny's Laundry: *sniffles* If only he hadn't ripped all his gold shirts. We told him there was there were blue available, but he was so insistent!

Why don't they do a combination of BBC mystery show/ Rogue One and replace ALL the actors each series and pretend nothing has changed?

So far my favorite character is Ensign Ricky (the one in the red shirt who beamed down to a planet with the two stars of the show). I sure hope they don't kill him off.

I mean next generation killed off tasha yar and Enterprise killed off tucker at the end.

So two of the four series did this (five if you include TAS), and it's a requirement?

Maybe the entire concept of Discovery is that its a new ship full of bright young redshirts, straight outta the academy. They're fired up and ready to take on the challenges of the Universe! But one by one, they get transferred to a ship called the Enterprise, and are never heard from again...

If they kill off a main character, I would want that character to remain dead for all time.

No magic blood, transporter shenanigans, or resurrection planets.
