Should Big Finish-BBC contract for Anime?

Having the fantastic Big Finish series in audio, which is wonderfully and masterfully done, leaves the open question..

Would the Big Finish Audio Dramas make an even greater impact as a series of Direct to DVD animation series?

Now I am not talking about the kind of animation done before by the BBC, which quite frankly those Doctor who animations were subpar, and just not worthy of being added to my collection. It is important to think of Animation as like a particular Artist on a series of comic books. For the purposes of sales, you would want a series that has excellent production, and direction for the animation, superior backgrounds and quality control. In the BBC's animations, they are very much behind in terms of their style, and fluidity, not to mention the fact none of them matched. So collecting them meant you got a one off here, and one off there, and nothing really to say, wow, I would watch that again.

Now suppose the BBC were able to subcontract to various Japanese animation houses, particularly those who produced what is arguably one of the best rendered animations done in the past.. like that of the quality of Macross Plus:

Imagining that level of quality, and a consistent style throughout a collection of DVD releases, with of course the fabulous renderings of the big finish audio CD covers, I can see that as a series and a great sale market for any Doctor Who fan to collect. With Animation improving here in the US, there is another option, as with DC comics animators at Warner Brothers, their style tho very anglo, and western is getting to be on par with those in the Japanese Market, the BBC and Big Finish would very well capture that audience, and in some cases offer a fully animated episode of those fully lost versions in the BBC archives for the serials missing on the troughton years and those in the Hartnell years. The animations placed in the DVDS for the missing episodes where the rest were recovered, were in my humble point of view, horrible, and not worth watching, even telesnap is subpar and not worth the investment, and as such I have not purchased any of those DVDs, rather deciding to go without then subject myself to sometimes horribly grueling sound with not real matching action to go with it.

I believe and wish whole heartedly that if the BBC were to work out a deal with Big Finish, and the Animation companies over seas, or subcontract the work under the BBC or a combined joint venture with Big Finish, they could achieve a wonderful series of Collectable DVDs from which to enjoy the fabulous images of the stories set forth in their audios.

an even added bonus could be a Saturday morning serial 30 minutes, of each broken up episode of a Big Finish audio in that quality animation, and would bring younger kids into the Doctor who fold, outside of the normal live action program.

Again, the tenants would have to be, the series be set in a style of animation on par with something like Macross Plus or better, and consistent IN ALL FUTURE RELEASES IN BOTH QUALITY AND STYLE, with action being a very methodically thought out direction. Big finish audios provides the sound, and either a direct to DVD release, or a half hour TV series for each series for kids on Saturday morning. Big finish could continue it's audio runs, but having a very high quality animation collection to go with their work to give sight to their story visions I feel is a missed opportunity, and I urge the executive directors at both companies to contemplate the idea at the very least. :techman:

So, what say you?

I would love a Doctor animated, and if there is a world were my writing ever went anywhere and the BBC offered me Doctor Who I'd argue for a series of animated films.

But not the Big Finish serials. They operate as audio plays. There's a lot of extra dialogue in there not needed if you have visuals. They don't give time for the action to unfold because someone has to be speaking.

Though it would be an absolute brilliant way of getting old Doctors back in action. Anyone from Baker onwards would be viable for a proper adventure on TV again. Of course, I'd argue for McGann. Or something for Colin Baker to try and show the rest of the world how good Big Finish proved him to be.

I always thought the occasional animated adventure was a nice touch back in the RTD days, and a great addition to the show. Would've been nice if they revived that somehow.

Not sure if BF would need to do this, but if it meant getting some of the older Doctors for a proper multi-Doctor story between Old and NuWho, I'm all for it!

Anime actually isn't that fluid animation. Even Macross Plus has a lot of still images, animation cheats and stuff like that. Also it's a four part direct-to-video series (although with a movie that has some changes), so it has a higher budget than a TV series would have. Plus it's over two decades old, and anime has changed a great deal since then.

There were some web animations done in the 90s and early 00s that I think were produced in part by Big Finish-Shada, Real Time, Death Comes To Time, Scream of the Shalka etc. However they're pretty much the same quality as the DVD reconstructions.

^ Big Finish did the audio for Real Time and Shada, the animation (such as it was) was minimal, barely breaking past moving stills. Scream of the Shalka was a fully animated stoy, by Cosgrove Hall.

Is this the animation for the Reign of Terror you guys were talking about?

Now, I have to say, I do like the Planet 55 Studios and their work, it does seem to look good, I just hope the animation is fluid.. I hated the Scream of the Shalka.. it was like something out of the 1980s and funimation.. but horribly worse.. Back to Planet 55 Studios tho, I would much rather buy a fully animated classic missing episode, and get the original missing surviving episodes on the specials side, then to have it live action, and then anime, and then live action again.. just makes the whole thing flow wrongly, and makes it hard to consume visually. if they released fully animated DVDs, it would be much more palatable in my humble opinion..

anyhow, check out the Planet 55 Studios art and their webpage..

Now, I don't think that Big Finish audios are all that hard to translate into Animation. It would only require creative editing to make it work.. like taking a book and reworking the screenplay to adapt to visuals, which would give the audio dramas their own unique shine as apposed to the brilliant animation to the story.. cause the audio would have more data, whereas the animation movie would have the visuals.. so good trade and equality intact to both
