That's where the New Star Trek movies lost me. They had a very unique opportunity to "retro" the whole design of the movie, which would a) harken to the original series and b) given the movie a very unique, stand-out look amidst all the cloned, look-alike, feel-alike copies which infect theaters these days.
But they blew it. What an opportunity. A perfect chance to go retro and having a logical reason, not "just because". Those of us who clamor for something 'different' are going to be disappointed for a long, long time, methinks.
As to "retro"ing the future in a mainstream film portraying "the future", it's a tricky line and if you get it wrong is just looks hokey. X-Men First Class is retro, but it's set in the past, which justifies the look.
