Shore Leave 2011

I'll be there. I'm always there. And frankly, the only reason I even spring for a weekend badge at all these days is to be at the autograph session on Friday night. I'm getting rather tired of the way the con gestapo run Shore Leave.

Hopefully this year I'll be even more organized and won't have to drag around an entire totebag of books to sort through each time I stop at a table. Even tagging names, I still couldn't find a frackin' thing.

I just realized one problem with my Nook. I won't have any newer paperbacks for the authors to own. Although I guess I could buy a copy for them to sign that I can then save, and just read the ebook.

Last year I actually ended up signing some kind of ebook reader for the first time. A fan asked me to write on the gizmo itself.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. What will happen to the tradition of book signings when we reach the point when most books are electronic? Maybe authors will sign cover flats or posters or cards that are printed up specifically for the occasion.

^That would make sense to me. They could just become the equivalent to actors signing head-shots.

Or perhaps future ebook readers will include a special electronic page upon which to affix a signature using a digital stylus.

^ Really?!? After talking about how you still use floppies, well... I'd just never have guessed! ;)

Hey, I just noticed that Eddie McClintock from WAREHOUSE 13 is now listed as a guest.

Talk about perfect timing. My WH13 novel goes on sale just in time for the con . . . .

Well, it'd be a simple thing for a device to capture a signature on someone's tablet pc and attach it to an eBook. The problem is that the Kindle doesn't accept any sort of input, it's purely "eInk" so the Kindle wouldn't have any way of capturing an electronic signature.

The Nook and other eReaders are touch screen and as such, just need the software created to allow for someone to capture a signature. Really can't imagine it'd be that hard to write.....

Of course, do authors really want people to have electronic digital copies of their signature?

Not that I've actually heard of anyone ever using an autographed book to forge someone's signature . . . .

^ This is *the* convention where Trek authors go; usually, just about all the authors that post here will be there.

I only wish I could go! I have a summer job that conflicts, every damn year.

I've wanted to attend it since I first saw Trekkies (the location is much more appealing than Las Vegas) -- sounds like I have additional incentive now. :)

Last year was my first con ever (thanks to Dave Mack for convincing me!) and it was my single best night of the year! The authors are so damn friendly and cool, and meeting Dave, Dayton Ward, Marco Palmieri, Kirsten Beyer, Greg Cox and so many more...it was just FUN.

I am going for the whole thing this year, and I am making it my going away party before I leave for Afghanistan 60 days later, so who wants to party with me????

Honestly, maybe it's a sad statement on my life, but I have been looking forward to Shore Leave 2011 since drove away at 2 am last year.

Just a generic comment: I was always a "closet" Trek/Scifi fan (but pretty vocal about how great BSG was), but being there with so many people who shared the same passions, for the first time I felt...home. I honestly cannot wait to see you all there.
