Shocked and Awed!

Celia Lovsky (T'Pau, "Amok Time") could do it either - and she was the matriarch of Vulcan! She had to spread her fingers with the other hand, off camera, then raise it into view.

Yeah, that's a famous story from TOS.

I don't understand why I can do it with my left hand but not my right. I'm definitely right handed, I play piano and guitar, I don't have weak hands...it's just weird. The only way I can sorta do it right handed my pinkie and ring finger lean forward rather than staying in the same plane as my middle and index fingers. Darn, and it looks amazingly easy when Nimoy does it with those looong slender fingers.

Do you suppose it's genetic like tongue rolling or wiggling your ears?

I was impressed as hell that all FIVE of those friends sitting behind me could flash off the salute, a couple of them could do it with either hand. Damn...I supose they've had forty years practice.

It's interesting about the salute - I can do it with either hand, but if I try similar but different patterns, I get different results:

1st three fingers, a gap and fourth finger: left only
1st finger, gap two fingers, gap and then fourth finger: left only
1st finger, gap three fingers: both hands.

Of the patterns I can do with both hands, it is definitely easier with the right.

I'm right-handed.

I may not be able to roll my tongue, but I can do the Vulcan salute with both hands. :D

^can do ;)

I'm ambidextrous. I can do the Vulcan salute with both hands.

now, can someone do it with their toes? :p

How about a Bronx cheer?
Are there people who cannot do that?

I can only do the Spock eyebrow with my left one; which one does he do it with?

I think Nimoy does it with his right brow and Zach with his left.:vulcan:

My favorite XI NuSpock eyebrow moment is on the bridge when Kirk slaps Spock on the arm before they beam over to the Narada ("See, we are getting to know each other." SLAP! Oops, Vulcan privacy taboo violation!)

Help!! I'm handicapped!! I can roll my tongue but I can only execute the Vulcan salute with my left hand!! I do the eyebrow lift with the left brow much easier than the right. I'm looking in the mirror and my right eyebrow lift is, well...pitiful, left is much better. OMG does this mean I'm a Romulan? :rommie:

The right one if memory serves... edit... oh wait I'm thinking of the salute.

What's funny about the eyebrow raising comments is that, when I was 12-13 with my best friend over, I always knew when not to needle my Dad. If one eyebrow went up, fine, but once 2 went up simultaneously, it was best to back off... :D

I think, in Trek XI, Urban used the correct eyebrow (left), but Quinto apparently can't lift his right eyebrow, so he lifted his left in both the scenes he had to do it (the scene with Pike, Kirk, Sulu and Olsen at the elevator and the one in Spock's timeship).

4 scenes at least: he does it after Kirk slaps him on the arm before they high tail it off to the Narada and also at the end of his encounter with Spock Prime at Starfleet.

I'm not surprised to hear about Quinto's troubles with the Vulcan salute. The last few times I've seen the movie, it's really struck me how he's holding his hand in that scene - all of his fingers are bent forward, like he's doing the Vulcan salute while holding an invisible softball.

I can do the salute with both hands. I practiced for a while when I was a kid; IIRC it took a while until I was able to do it without holding my fingers with my other hand. But I can't do anything with my eyebrows, the best I can manage is opening my eyes wider.

FailedLurker, what area do you live in? j/c

Does anyone think we might see a big spike up this week, being the 4th and all? Trek may be perfectly positioned in it's remaining theaters to pick up the overspill from everything else.

Ah, yes, but can you do it with your toes? Seriously, I can do it with both hands and the toes on my right foot (I have double-jointed toes that spread apart out of joint).

Seriously. I would do the Vulcan salute with my toes long before I ever was into Trek. :guffaw:

It's great to see the legs that this movie has! Go, go, go!

I always notice that, too; that's why I can't concentrate on the scene and am thinking about the glue.

Well, I'd like to know your secret for filling Star Trek theaters.

I would really like to see that! Some people have talented tongues, others...
