Shocked and Awed!

I went this afternoon for the 4th time to see the movie, what a great show! However, I was amazed to see that the theater was 1/2 full and it was a 1:10 pm showing. Everyone had a good time and there was applause at the end. The real shock here is that Transformer 2 was not sold out. This movie has great legs!

NICE! When I went the fourth time (this last Wednesday), there was about 15-20 people... but it was a later showing. But they did applaud. :)

If Trek is playing in my area, around Independence Day, I'm going. My birthday is that weekend. ;)

I too was surprised when I went 5-6 weeks into it and came upon a full theater on a weeknight.

Just so long as those theater counts don't drop off too precipitously, Star Trek has another few viable weeks/weekends left, especially with July 4 coming up...

I'll be interested to see how many people show up to the IMAX screenings coming to my area "SOON"...

I went with friends last night to a regular showing (non IMAX, non DLP) at my local theater. XI is now eligible for $5 anytime admission. The theater was a medium sized one, not the largest anymore, but it was over 3/4 full with only seats in the front rows open - I was amazed for a Thursday night. Many people there apparently hadn't seen it yet, but everyone laughed in the right spots (classic Bones line got big apreciative laughs, as did Spock's "fascinating" in the Jellyfish).

The whole theater applauded at the end of this showing too. I turned around and 5 baby boomers behind me were doing the Vulcan salute. We had a hilarious converstion about that and Quinto doning exercises and taping his fingers together to get it right before filming started. (I can do it left handed easier than right, and I'm right handed.) I asked the folks if they were repeat viewers - they said no, they were seeing it for the first time. As old fans, they were leery of NuTrek, but they'd heard from friends that XI was really good and they should see it on a big screen before it left theaters.

Interesting WOM is still having an effect. Whodathunkit this far into the run.

transforemer2 wil be a monster thoug.

Around here (in PoDunk) it still is showing 4 times a day 1, 4, 7 and 10. This is great!

:D I am really liking this thread!

I heard that they wound up gluing Zach's fingers; that he never could manage the salute. Every time I see that last scene, I am totally distracted looking at his glued fingers during the salute.

Out of curiosity, how often has anyone encountered sold out shows in the last few years? I keep hearing people say that the enormous number of screens that big movies open on these days has caused the sold-out phenomenon to become rather rare.

Oh, they tied Shatner's fingers together with dental floss for the "how many fingers am I holding up?" scene in ST III.

When I went to see Trek for the first time, there was a show that was listing as sold out - can't remember now whether it was an earlier Trek showing or a different film altogether, and when I went to see Up the 7:30 show was listing as sold out.

I see sold-out showings all the time, especially on Friday-Sunday.

Awesome thread. So cool to know it is still rocking in some areas. It isnt here, but i'm so glad to hear it still has legs elsewhere.

I love hearing how conversations (in the theaters) are started by total strangers because of this movie. When i went for my third viewing a seriously little old lady sat a seat away from me. Before the movie started she leaned over to me and said, "I'm so glad i got to see this before it was gone".

When the movie was over she was so totally delighted and said, "That was GREAT!"

And when i say she was a seriously little old lady i am NOT kidding!

This is just so freaking cool!

It really bodes well for the next movie in terms of good will... :)

Enjoyed this story; thanks!

I saw it yesterday afternoon in Imax, and it was a bit over 3/4 full. I was late and had to sit in the second row way over on the side. And when I left, people were lined up out the door for the next showing. Went back today, and if it wasn't sold out, it was damn close - there were only a handful of empty seats scattered around the theater, even the front rows were full. And again, they were lined up for the next show when I left.

I've noticed a lot of new people at showings lately - the last few times, I've seen the movie, there have been gasps when Spock Prime is revealed, and today about half the theater started chuckling, one of those "Ah! Look what they did," sudden laughs.

I know a few people who still haven't seen it but want to go, they aren't Trek fans, but word of mouth has got them interested. This is contributing to some late legs.
I think this will be in theater's until the kids go back to school in September.

So two months of an average of $250,000 days after July 4 and Harry Potter, that's another 15 million for around $265 million. :)

I know I could round a group of people up to go if they would just show it at my local IMAX.

Oh and my local drive in is open now and they are featuring a double feature of Transformers and Trek, good for some sales, but who gets the credit or do both movies share the credit

Celia Lovsky (T'Pau, "Amok Time") could do it either - and she was the matriarch of Vulcan! She had to spread her fingers with the other hand, off camera, then raise it into view.

Yeah, that's a famous story from TOS.

I don't understand why I can do it with my left hand but not my right. I'm definitely right handed, I play piano and guitar, I don't have weak hands...it's just weird. The only way I can sorta do it right handed my pinkie and ring finger lean forward rather than staying in the same plane as my middle and index fingers. Darn, and it looks amazingly easy when Nimoy does it with those looong slender fingers.

Do you suppose it's genetic like tongue rolling or wiggling your ears?

I was impressed as hell that all FIVE of those friends sitting behind me could flash off the salute, a couple of them could do it with either hand. Damn...I supose they've had forty years practice.

That is a good question, and a smart pairing--of course both are Paramount tentpoles so no surprise there.

I'm also "recruiting" for the IMAX showing in my area "SOON"... I'll likely see it once a week for as long as they run it...
