Ships of the Line Calendar 2011

HOoftheKinshaya

Lieutenant

Has the giant Romulan Warbird that appears in the calendar been shown elsewhere, either show or novel? I am just wondering what its origin is.

If it's the Warbird I think you're referring to, it's a new design by Andrew Probert, although it's based on what he originally wanted to do with the Warbird on TNG. He wanted to do a vertical ship, but the producers insisted on going the conventional horizontal route. Now Probert's using the calendar to show the kind of Warbird he wanted to do in the first place.

Is it me though or just the way it is pictured but it seems to dwarf the D'deridex Warbirds also in the illustration?

The vertical Warbird has been shown in numerous "behind the scenes" TNG art books, like The Art of Star Trek, and The Continuing Mission. But this is the first time we will see it in a large size, in all its glory, and in full color.

Just arrived today via amazon. The vertical warbird is...ok I guess.

It's somewhat confusing because though it's 'meant to' be the aberration from the norm it sort of looks like a traditional warbird which then makes you think the traditional warbirds are the 'odd' ones since it's a portrait picture in landscape form.

(not sure if that made sense)

I have to admit that I liked it when I saw it today. It's impressive and I can see it as something that the Romulans would build as one of their command ships.

Yeah, it is clearly more than a standard Warbird in vertical configuration. It dwarfs the two standard Warbird also in the illustration. I hope we see a description of it in an upcoming novel.

The cover is uninspired. It's just an image from last year's calendar cropped. The TOS Enterprise or Defiant leaving that asteroid base. I hope the artwork inside isn't like that, too.

Nope, not just you. It's supposed to be a much bigger ship.

Doug Drexler had some sneak-peeks on his blog. Your milage may vary, but the peeks are certainly not the same old stuff:

No, that's a new one. The asteroid base picture was from a higher angle, looking down on the Defiant.

was already in the last calendar (second image of the last row).

Son of a gun.

Well, it's probably just to solicitation cover, in that case. They always just use a cropped image from the last one as a placeholder for the cover until they release the final.

I like the image of the ring-ship; really makes it come alive. I kinda wish we could just buy individual images in poster format (oh, how my walls would be covered by now!).
