Ship and Crew backstories for shows

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral

What would be some interesting "assemble the crew" variations?

What about an outsider captain who commandeers a ship that's either in the throes of mutiny, or in chaos after an attack? And they're in Federation space, but this captain is trying to avoid being arrested before they can prove something (themselves innocent of a crime, say) And the crew eventually warms up to the captain to the point where they take their side. (So sort of like Voyager, sans Delta Quadrant, and they're trying not to be "rescued/brought back")

It's after a war and Starfleet is back in to a rebuilding phase, bringing various officers to fill billets and improve ship presence around the Federation. One officer has come up for command, but has several black marks on their record that preclude them from taking command, including failing to find a cloaked ship, and struggling to maintain their crew morale.

Starfleet Command has given them one more chance, but they have to win over their crew to keep this command.

The captain is not Starfleet, but has been granted emergency equivalency, rank, and a command as a particular mission needs someone with their skillset/experience to take the lead. Some crew resent the move, maybe were close to the old captain, or think the new captain isn't deserving of the job. Perhaps the first officer had been tapped to captain the ship, but gets demoted to first officer instead (and unlike the Kelvinverse, winds up staying there).

He/she takes the tack of asking the crew to teach them - to fill in the gaps in their learning - by shadowing the crew in various positions, going on missions they don't have to, etc.

Some crew members are also added for their skills, and these new guys are more open to the captain.

What if all the crewmembers are displaced out of time, and they're stuck in this era? So not only are they out of step with Starfleet/Federation history/culture, they're not even what their own species has become now.

It's kind of a "what do we do with these people" rehab project - stick a bunch of temporal maroon-ees on a ship and see what happens.

Once, at a world few now remember, they saved the Federation itself — at the cost of their ship, their ideals, and their friendship. Each left Starfleet, and each other, far behind.

But twenty years later, the forgotten crisis threatens anew, and Starfleet needs the only experienced experts it has — all of whom still hate each other.

Can a once-stalwart crew reforge itself from its own ashes?
