Sherlock - Series 2

Could anyone make out what Holmes says just before he flips open the booobytrapped safe? It sounded like "______ cameos!"

"Vatican cameos"

Which I assume means 'duck your head and body as if you're at prayer' thus avoiding the bullets.

It's a reference to a throwaway line in one of the Holmes stories (can't remember which one) in which Holmes remarked that he'd been distracted by "the affair of the Vatican cameos for the Pope" (I paraphrase, from lack of memory). We don't get more detail in the original story, but I think it's OK to assume that in the BBC1 Holmes universe, the resolution of the case involved a similarly dangerous hiding place, making the shout a warning to Watson to duck.

As mentioned above, the "Vatican cameos" was something mentioned by Holmes in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", but no more details were revealed. There was also a text based game (or text adventure) based on it, but I never played it, so I have no idea if it was a reference to something that happened in it (I wouldn't put it past Moffat and Gatiss).

They can't kill her, so there were never any surprises there.

Why can't they kill her?

I must admit my expectations for Irene Adler were pretty high considering how much I love Rachel McAdams and her take on the character, but I have to say I was utterly wowed by Lara Pulver. I must admit I was disappointed and a bit surprised when she was "killed" (the first time) so I wasn't at all surprised when she returned.

Why not? The character only appeared once in the Holmes cannon. Everything is up for grabs in an adaptation, especially for one set in a completely different time period.
After all, the movies killed her off, too (although I doubt she's actually dead there either).

I also learnt that Americans can't pronounce "Coventry" - assuming Bruce Boxleitner is a typical example.
How's it supposed to be pronounced? I've always taken it the way it's spelled -- three syllables, roughly "kuhv-en-tree."

That's also how I say it.

cov-un-tree.

a short o sound not an uh.

That's the way that most Brits would say it although I guess the authentic way would be with a West Midlands accent. Bruce Boxleitner pronounced it as "cove-en-tree" which really jarred with me. Anyway let's not derail the thread.

I expect Ms Whiplash, I mean Adler, to make a welcome return in future. No one has yet mentioned that the character was originally written by ACD as being American. I guess dominatrices are generally expected to be British.

I expect she probably does have a future role to play to justify that rather out of place ending.

She and Moriarty are less modern updates of their respective characters from the stories and more original characters filling in the archenemy and female adversary roles in the Sherlock series.

One thing that I find awesome is that finally put a deerstalker hat on Holmes.

Bring back the deerstalker!!

I wished they'd filmed 'The Geek Interpreter'. The story's on Dr Watson's website. And that counter is still stuck at 1895. :D

Rewatched it. The whole thing is STILL damned sharp and funny. :)
