Sherlock - BBC ONE & HD - Sunday 25th

If Sherlock Holmes exists as a real person in the 21st Century, that means that Arthur Conan Doyle (or Watson) never wrote those stories, meaning that all the writers, detectives, scientists et cetera who were inspired in our world had completely different lives and careers in that world; not to mention all the producers, directors, actors et cetera involved in theatrical adaptations, pastiches, parodies and so on. I wonder how significant the changes would really be to a world without a literary Holmes.

There's a really good book that I think you'd be interested in. It's called Sherlock Holmes: The Unauthorized Biography, and it's written as if he were a real person. It's a fascinating read.

^^ Cool, I will add that to my cart. Reminds me of PJF's biographies of Tarzan and Doc Savage.

Perhaps they say "No shit, Dupin"?
Yeah, I wonder if another detective and body of work would have taken his place, and how that would have effected the tropes of fiction and culture in general.

In first Holmes story, (A Study in Scarlet), Watson compares Holmes to Dupin: "You remind me of Edgar Allen Poe's Dupin. I had no idea that such individuals did exist outside of stories.". Perhaps in this universe Dupin has really taken the place of Holmes, with dozens of movies and apocryphal stories. And a summer blockbuster with Robert Downey jr

And... a new TV series set in the present day.

OK, I just watched the three episodes. The first episode was really well done and had me really intrigued. I thought it was a really clever modern day reinterpretation of the material. Loved the characters. Loved the tension they built just over an old man talking to him across a table.

The second episode was utterly uninteresting and bored me to tears.

The third episode was much better, fast paced and frantic, but the ending was just horrible. I really, really, REALLY did not like the guy they got to play Moriarty or they way they chose to play him. It was like the Master in "The End of Time", just ridiculously over the top and goofy. Not cool. He was NOT menacing or clever. They spend 4.5 hours building him up as this ultimate evil and then he's this mincing little boy.

So... I have mixed feelings about it as a whole. Will watch the second series though.

It's been confirmed Sherlock is back for 3 more 90 minute episodes for next Autumn.

Hunt also confirmed the recommissions of Sherlock Holmes and Luther for BBC One. Following a highly successful launch with over 7.5m viewers watching the first episode in July 2010, Sherlock returns for three new 90-minute episodes in Autumn 2011

Autumn 11!! I can't possibly wait that long!

I hope this time the middle episode is a bit betterf though...
