Sheesh! That S5 DVD/BD boxset is pricey!

I have a limit of about £40 on series box sets so Series 5 is about £15 too much for my liking. I do plan on getting it at some point though.

What's stingy about the S5 extras? What isn't included in the set this time as compared to past seasons?

There's only 6 commentaries, all of which are invision (which seems a bit pointless really)

There's no deleted scenes.

Also there's only 13 episodes, where some of the the previous has 14 (inc Xmas specials) yet it's not any cheaper.

They've also managed to split a two parter that was on one disc for the vanillas.

I'm not saying all of these things bother me personally, but one thing or another is bothering some.

That sucks. The commentaries are probably my favourite part of the extras in past sets. Do we know yet who's on the commentaries? And I wasn't really a fan of the in-vision commentaries before, but I guess it's better than nothing, and maybe they've improved the presentation a little.

Meanwhile, the price of the BD set has dropped 9 pounds at Amazon.co.uk. I ordered it.

I've not bought any Who DVDs for ages because I have been poor, and didn't really enjoy the Specials enough to warrant buying them anyway.

I've not bought a Classic DVD since Battlefield came out (with the exception of The War Games!), getting on for two years ago. Looking at the prices on Amazon now, I'm glad I didn't. The prices tumble, so most single releases from over a year ago are available for about £7, and the boxes like E-Space, Black Guardian and Dalek War are now £15 each. Might be time to start dipping in again when I have the financial means.

I don't own many BBC dvds but I've always found the prices to be really expensive compared to US stuff.

^I think that's for 2 reasons. First one being the expected audience is smaller usually, secondly BBC TV have a blanket deal for music on broadcast and have to renegotiate for DVD release so they may have to pay extra for something that was already done on TV. Where as I believe US shows have deals negotiated for both at the same time. And of course there's costs that aren't amortised across a large amount of episodes in the same way they are in the US. So whereas an American show might work out £1.50 per episode £1.50 per episode on a 6 episode series would be cheaper than a film yet you'd get more content.

I'm not saying that I agree with having to pay more, just I can sort of understand it.

^ You are always so imformative, Bob. :) I like that in a skutter. For me, the cost per box set v the number of episodes is always an issue on BBC dvds. I was considering trying out Spooks recently for the first time and I just couldn't justify to myself so few epiosdes for such a high outlay (although I know that there are those who love Spooks say that it would be worth it! )

Personally I would say the first 4 series are good, they get a bit lame after that. I believe there are box sets of multiple seasons that work out much cheaper than buying individual sets but they don't seem to be on the market any more.

If you would really like to try them out you could try them on SeeSaw, the first series is £4.99 to rent, but it does mean watching on a monitor or hooking up your computer to the TV.

Spooks does tail off slightly, although I have to say Series 9 on currently is probably the best for quite a while!

With BBC DVDs I ussually find if you wait a year or two they do drop in price quite a bit--certainly I've never paid more than about a tenner for any classic disc!

Excellent.

I am trying to cut down the amount of DVDs I buy because too many never get rewatched (in fact some never even get watched!) but I've watched all the Spooks boxsets at least twice through)

^Tell me about it, I have hundreds and half way through one set another one will take my interest and I never get round to watching everything all the way through.

Best value boxsets ever were my Blakes 7 ones cos lord knows how many times I've rewatched them!
