Shatnertage's Mostly-1st-Time Watch Thread

The thing I don't get about the simulation is, why did they program the simulation to back Sisko into a corner? By not inviting the Romulans in and then by letting the Jem'Hadar rampage over the station, you're making it very difficult for the Alpha Quadrant to be your friends. It just seems like they weren't really making a good faith effort, even in the simulation.

I was very lucky last night to pay a visit to...

"The House of Quark"

This was an absolutely brilliant episode. Good, clever comedy, good acting, and a few plot twists. It's about everything I want in Star Trek.

From the moment Kozak fell on the knife, I knew that this was going to be The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance redux. Considering they already did this with Li Nalas back in "The Homecoming," at first I thought it just meant they were out of ideas. But once the plot started unfolding, I didn't care.

I love how it showed some Klingons being just as scheming as the Ferengi, and it let Quark play the hero for a little while at least. It showed him as a smart and even compassionate character, which is great.

He had great interplay with Grilka, too, and it was awesome to see Gowron presiding over the High Council.

Most people agree with you on this one; a very strong episode. Doubly so for taking two of Trek's often more one-dimensional races and throwing them together in amusing but also insightful ways. But then the writers are good with using Quark to that effect - you've seen him out-logic a Vulcan, moralize back at the Humans and now he offers his own Ferengi-brand wisdom in a critique of the Klingons.

We also got Morn apparently leave the bar with a woman in the tease, so what else can you ask for?

Oh, Morn's quite the flirt. He gets a lot of female attention over the course of the series.

Plus, the guy's loaded, and there's nothing bitches love more than a wallet overflowing with gold-pressed latinum.

The Founders aren't out to be friends, they want to control solids. The simulation is used to test how much control and abuse Starfleet is willing to take. And to the Founder's disappointment, Starfleeters doesn't take well to even minor controls such as having Jem'Hadar roaming around freely.

^ Definitely a good one. It's always good when Trek actually uses the non-Human characters to good effect - something DS9 does much more than any other series.

And for all the talk about how awful the Ferengi comedy episodes are, this one is very good, even humorous.

Tried to watch "Equilibrium" last night. Got 22 minutes in, realized, "it's only half over!" and went to sleep. Not my cup of tea.

Hm...you might want to try that one again if you didn't even give it a full chance. I'm not even a Dax fan and I thought better of it than that.

^ Yeah, I like "Equilibrium" as well. It's slow in contrast to the first three episodes of the season, but it's a great character piece, IMO.

This isn't even the worst Dax episode of the first third of S3!

(actually, Equilibrium isn't too bad, but it does suffer from that sluggish early pacing a lot of Echevarria Character-Episodes do)

i was put off by how out of character Dax felt in that episode. it felt very clunky and forced which is a shame because i liked the actual idea nestled in there

Too much medical technobabble for my tastes, but YMMV, of course.

A funny note: I semi-MST a lot of this stuff, and one moment stands out. When Dax comes to Bashir's quarters, there's a moment when they're both sitting down. She rubs his arm for a second, then he springs up, slightly hunched over, and walks to the other side of the room. "I've got a boner!" I yelled out during the pause in conversation.

I guess you had to be there.

Unfortunately for you, the worst Dax episode of the season (and possibly the series) is still to come. You'll know it when it arrives!
