Shatner

Aw, c'mon... those rumors seem to have been based entirely upon a joking exchange between Shatner and Nimoy during a "stage show" one time. Am I missing something else?

Nice irony there, for those of us who are "Enterprise" fans, if that turned out to be his last shot.

I'VE GOT IT !

Ghost Kirk, ala the movie Ghost, only Spock can see and hear him, yes, no ?

Okay.... i'm not being serious here.....
Move along now, move along now....

Agreed.
Shatner may be have a lot of unsavory traits, and he doesn't owe Trek anything, but at the same time I don't think even he would let money get in the way of one last chance to play Kirk in a movie like this. This isn't the same as just an episode of ENT, after all.

I don't think he ever had a role. Maybe there was some talk about how to work him in, but the character being dead notwithstanding, old Kirk just wasn't needed for the story.

Over on Ain't It Cool News there is a report about what this film COULD be about... and what Nimoy's role would be.

Romulans thrown back in time...? Spock altering the time line...? reboot of the continuity and of the series...?

Genius or foolish?

Interesting tale behind that, but overall "In a Mirror Darkly" turned out for the best without Shatner. Here's a clipping from British magazine SFX about the alternative version:

The other option, revealing him to be the Chef might've worked within the context of the show. I always felt that was a better option than Riker, given the roads to TOS Manny Coto had been building.

interesting article. I liked Shatner's proposal, and the one proposed to him sounded awful.

Exactly.

Well, the idea of resurrecting Trek as a big budget film doesn't seem to be an "old home week" theme aimed at gratifying the decades-long fan followings of the original actors.

Shatner, physically, can no longer play Kirk convincingly, to my eyes.

YMMV, though.

You know, I'm a big Shatner supporter; I love Denny Crane and T.J. Hooker, and even "The Transformed Man," believe it or not. But let's assume that money had nothing to do with it and this whole thing isn't a big publicity stunt. If Shatner really was disappointed that he's not in it, and really was serious about wanting to be in it, you know what he should've done? He should've used some of that Boston Legal revenue and hired a personal chef/personal trainer and lost a lot of weight. Honestly, if he wasn't so fat, I don't think there would be nearly as many objections about him being too old for the part. I think he looks great for his age; he's just way to fat. If he lost a lot of weight, then Abrams and co. could've even considered setting his appearance before GEN, and Kirk's death wouldn't be an issue. Of course, he'd run the risk that he'd lose that weight and they still wouldn't cast him, but then he'd be healthy! What a deal.
Oh well. It's probably too late now, unless he does one of those unhealthy crash diets. But I'm just saying, if he was serious...

He did that in the past. I'm afraid it might kill him if he tried it now.
