Shatner Has Not Seen Trek XI

Exactly. It's not that unusual a writing process when multiple authors are involved. One person blocks out scenes, plot points, dialogue while another does the narrative/descriptive writing.

Yeah.

You can call that "writing" if you want to.

Well, here's a peculiar thought:

Has anyone ever seen or read about Shatner's favorite movies? Are there any photos of him at premiere events, for example, other than for a project that he's involved in?

Unlikely as it may seem, Shatner may not be much of a moviegoer period and may never have been. The only reference I've ever seen him make to films has been to express admiration for Spencer Tracy, with whom he worked.

He´s got tinnitus and has been depressed since his dad passed away in the 60s, according to the trivia section on IMDB. Maybe those are the real reasons why he doesn´t go to the movies.

Shatner hasn't even seen the full episodes he appeared in. Most of the actors in a TV show don't. It's work, they do that for a living, they don't have time to be fans of it at the same time.

Some of you sound like Shatner was personally insulting you by not seeing this new movie. Put the fan back in fanatic.
Yes, I think this is probably the most sensible post in this thread. I can't believe people are actually trying to say Shatner has some kind of "issues" just because he hasn't bothered to watch a movie.

I suspect the reason Shatner doesn't particularly care to spend his free time watching movies is similar to why most people don't spend their free time immersed in the same activities they use to make a living. A little balance in one's life can be a good thing.

Although it apparently rubs some people the wrong way, Shatner is not a Trekkie. His life does not revolve around Star Trek. Get over it! It's really not a sin.

Fascinating speculation on Shatner. He's friends with Nimoy, right? Why not watch the movie to see how Nimoy did? Why not after all these years be curious about how they include Spock in this movie?

Because he's also friends with Patrick Stewart and doesn't care about the TNG movies or episodes.

All of that granted, I don't think it's stretching things to say that Shatner got a lot of attention before the movie came out as a result of not being in the film. It's only a small step from there to suppose that he won't mind getting a lot more attention as result of saying that he hasn't seen it, either. It's an easy win for Shatner and he doesn't even really have to go out of his way to get it -- people will keep coming to him to ask about it. Sounds like an ideal situation for him to be in, does it not?

^
We can send him the SAVE ENTERPRISE DVD first. Just for shits and giggles to see how he freaks out.

I used to be a teacher once. A hurricane came along, and I moved, and I was a teacher no more. Now my school has reopened, on the other side of the country, and someone else has my classroom. It's not practical for me to move back, and it's too late anyway. Now I find that it is damn near impossible to break into teaching here.

What does this have to do with the thread? Well, perhaps Shatner is struggling with his own mortality. He knows there is far less time ahead than behind him. For every person who faces his own end calmly, there are probably ten people who are scared and sad. Seeing someone else play the role that made him famous probably makes him sad, and reminds him how old he is. Is that so hard to understand?

Shatner is not obligated to see STXI. Why should he?

He was not in the movie so what is the motive to see it? Did it matter if he saw any of other TNG movies? DS9? VOY? of ENT?

Another reason to bash Shatner.

An even better question: Why should anyone care if he has seen it or not?

But his very good friend was in it, at least he could see Nimoy's parts. If one of my good friends was in a movie I'd want to see it.

In fairness, the plot of Star Trek V is more coherent.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say Shatner did a lousy job with a decent idea, and Abrams did a bang-up job with a terrible idea.

Well, yeah, if a friend of mine managed to get into a movie, sure I'd go to see it, but this really isn't the same thing. These two men are lifelong working actors as well as lifelong friends. I doubt that seeing either of their faces up on the Big Screen is any particular thrill for the other. ;)

Let's be clear....I stated at the start of this thread that I am a fan of Shatner. I just read the article on Trekweb and thought that it might be a good discussion-starter here --- after all, this is supposed to be a discussion board.

This was never intended to be a "bash Shatner" thread. However, people should be able to take a bit of constructive criticism/critical discussion about Mr. Shatner.

I'd say Shatner did a great job with a marginal idea, and with a marginalized production force that undermined him as much as it helped him.

When I see the word 'bang' in association with something that seems drunk and spoiled with lens flares, I gotta assume you mean banged his head on something. From the first 7min I saw online, the way they shot this trek movie should be illegal, it is so crappy-looking.

Well, Shatner did say this past weekend in Vegas that he'd see the new movie in a private screening with Nimoy on two conditions...that Leonard buy the popcorn and hold his hand. ;)
