Shar

Gawd - this is a complete turn-off for me, I know Ian and others will look forward to this book, but I find Andor based stories and Shar almost as boring as the mirror universe.

We've had exactly one Andor-based novel ("Paradigm" in WoDS9) and one Andor-based short story ("The Captain and the King" in "Enterprise Logs"), neither written by Dayton Ward - and yet you've proclaimed all Andor-based tales "boring"? :wtf: We also had the amazing Andorian-focused "Captain's Table: Once Burned".

Andorians are Star Trek aliens. They can be feisty, brave, funny, gloomy, dangerous, artistic or adventurous. "Boring" is in the eyes of the beholder.

Did you also find the IDW "Spotlight on Andorians" comic - or issue #1 of "Leonard McCoy: Frontier Doctor" - boring, too?

Never read them.

Oh wait - maybe I read it Spotlight on Andorians - doesn't it conclude with some badly drawn andorians fighting in an Alleyway?

I genuinely don't understand how anybody who has actually read the stories in question can think that.

The DS9 MU arc was very explicitly tied in with EVERY ongoing arc in the current DS9 books. Cardassia, Bajor, the Dominion, the Ascendants. The events depicted also had profound effects on Kira, Sisko, Vaughn, Dax and Taran'atar at the least.

It is only because of what happened in those stories that the Ascendant arc has finally kicked into action.

It's been barely a year in story time. A crapload of stuff has happened in that time - too much in my opinion. That's why I prefer to think of it as actually stretching stuff out over two seasons.

And it's been less than a month since the departure of the Founders in Olympus Descending. Exactly what do you think could have happened in that time?

Your lack of satisfaction with the pace of the stories is nothing to do with the quality of the stories themselves. It's purely the "fault" (if it can be called such, which I say it can't) of the speed with which they can be written and the ongoing drama at Pocket.

Besides, look at the amount of world shattering stuff that happened in any one season of the show that you want the books to hew to so closely. At the most there was one or two major galactic events per season. You tend to forget that it took seven years for those stories to fold out, and lots of stuff not all connected happened in the meantime.

Eh, I read it all. It was merely a side-story. A distraction. It derailed the DS9 relaunch until it finally ground to a halt and now has to be retooled.

All that stuff that Rough Beasts mentions as happening in the past would have been great to watch unfold in real-time, instead because the DS9 relaunch was derailed by a side-story we missed all that happening.

The MU had nothing to do with the Dominion remnants, Bajoran society, or the rest of the Alpha Quadrant at all. It had nothing at all whatsoever with exploring the post-war Federation, or really even post-war DS9. Instead it was all about Illyana, and mirror Kira, and a MU universe I don't care about.

That's just my opinion though.

But it did introduce us to Illiana who has now gone on to become the leader (?) of the Ascendants army. And besides, the MU stuff didn't totally derail the series, it only took 3 books in 22 book series.

it only took 3 books in 22 book series.

Which was at least one book too many for what it accomplished. It felt like it dragged on, and the payoff, The Soul Key novel, was very underwhelming.

Though my opinion on that is biased by my huge dislike of the MU.

^Well, Fearful Symmetry and The Soul Key were meant to be a single book. But there were unavoidable production delays, including a change of author, so it ended up being reworked as two books so that audiences would get at least part of the story on the promised publication date.

^^ Which was a noble decision to give the fans something at the expected date, but still, Fearful Symmetry and The Soul Key most likley would have told a much better story as one book, even if there had been a further delay. Sometimes things dont need to be long, and three books just ended up being too much for what it was in my opinion.
