Shadow (NOT Shadows) of the Empire (Spoilers Acceptable)

Isn't Jacen basically pronounced like Jason? I am so deaf I probably wouldn't tell the difference – if there's one.

I assume it's pronounced like Jason, but I had a pronunciation for Jorus C'Boath in my head for the last twenty-four years that went out the window when I heard Timothy Zahn pronounce it. I thought it was "SUH-bow-ath," and Zahn says, "say-BO-ath."

I think that in the audiobook, it was more like the first way. Maybe that's where you got that from?
It's hard to remember exactly. I haven't listened to it since the '90s.

I the real world, "Ben" is going to resonate more with the audience than "Bail" or "Anakin". And definitely more than "Jacen".

I think Ben would have made more sense if Luke had a son. Han barely knew the guy.

I mean, if Han and Leia wanted to pick a name to honor someone they knew, they should have named him Wicket.

Luke barely knew the guy too. They met maybe a day before they both met Han. Prior to that "Old Ben Kenobi" was the crazy hermit people talked about from time to time.
No, but he did continue to appear as a Force Ghost to Luke throughout the entirety of his training (and continued to long after that, for all we know).

^ Some people think Ben should have been named Jacen... even though this cinematic story has absolutely nothing to do with the written stories that featured the character Jacen Solo.
It really isn't so much that he should have been named Jacen - that just would have been nice. It's that he shouldn't have been named Ben.

OK now I definitely don't know what you're arguing. I thought your point was that naming him something other than 'Jacen' went against the EU. Why on earth is the specific name 'Ben' such a problem? OK, Han didn't have quite such a connection to Kenobi that Luke had but Leia turned to him for help in a crisis and started the whole goddamn franchise. Or, here's an idea, maybe he's not named after Obi-Wan at all? It's not Harry Potter, not everyone is named after someone, it might just be his first name. Something that 'fits' with his dark side name - kylo ren, solo ben.

Ultimately, it was a simple name, that is obviously a name on first hearing, for Han to shout. In the context it was important that the audience, EU experts or not, Star Wars first timers or not, know that he is shouting his son's birth name. In a franchise where the lead character is called 'Luke', I don't think 'Ben' is all that bizarre a choice.

Yeah, I was going to joke that Ben Solo is Han's father's name ;) Or maybe his maternal grandfather was named Ben.

Not on Earth. A long time ago, in a... well, you know. ;) It's a problem because in the EU, Ben was Luke's son's name. Some here seem to think Han and Leia would have a reason to use that name - okay. fine. I disagree, and see it as a poor name choice at best, and a possible slight to EU diehards, at worst. This has all been gone over in much greater detail, if you read back in the thread.

If we're going by the EU - and clearly we aren't ;) - Han probably wouldn't name a kid after his dad.

Not everybody is specifically named after somebody else. Maybe they just happened to like the sound of the name "Ben," or maybe they liked the etymological meaning of the word, from whatever language in it originally comes from in the setting of the Star Wars galaxy.

It's spelled C'baoth, not C'Boath.

I'm a casual watcher (not a fan, per se), and have remained ignorant of the EU for decades because it's way too convoluted, complicated, and stuffed with overblown history that can't possibly fit within the timeframe it occupies.

That being said, I found Han's shout "BEN!" to be very profound on several levels. First, it conjures familiarity in the minds of the 'casual fan'. Second (as a father), you can completely hear Han reaching out to his son, and simultaneously rip away the Kylo persona to reveal a hurting child. Third: it's simple, and gets the point across without leaving the audience saying "Who?".
