"Shades of Gray"

-- CONTINUED --

AREA 51 - NEVADA

The President looked to the military men, who were saluting him, puzzled looks on their faces.

"Anything we can do for you Mister President?" the General asked.

Bensen produced the folder containing the information on Project Blue Book, which he handed to the General.

"Yeah." Bensen began. "You can begin by explaining all this to me... and when you've finished that, you can show me where the Oravni wreckage is kept... as well as any supply you have of Element 115." he stated, sternly, and no-nonsense.

EARTH ORBIT

The small Orvani saucer broke free of Earth's atmosphere, and raced towards the massive Orvani warship, which was now settling into a high orbit over the homeworld of the human race.

ORVANI SAUCER

The Commander and his crew looked at the image of the massive warship on the panoramic display, as the warship loomed closer with each passing second.

"Their weapons are fully charged." the Weapons officer called out, to the Commander.

"We're no match for a ship that size." the Commander began. "Besides... if they wanted to fire on us, the would have done so already... they want to--" he began, but was cut short, as a wash of brilliant blue light enveloped him, vanishing him from the Bridge of his ship.

AREA 51 - NEVADA

The General and his men were complying with the President's request, and showing him the files and artifacts relating to the Roswell crash, and other topics covered in the Blue Book files, when the General was alerted to some new data, from one of his men.

"We may have a problem here, people." the man began. "Our defense satellites are tracking a large Orvani ship entering Earth orbit... profile fits an Orvani warship." he added.

This confused Bensen.

"Wait a minute... how the hell do you know that? How can you tell what kind of ship that is? How do you have that information?" he asked.

The Army man ignored the President, merely adding to his information...

"Another Orvani ship has left Earth's surface... on an intercept course with the warship... her weapons have been fully armed." he relayed, as everyone wore looks of concern.

Just then, the President was again engulfed in a wash of brilliant blue light.

GROOM LAKE - NEVADA

The furious exchange of gunfire from the camos and the Secret Service agents stopped, as both groups looked to the Orvani saucer, which now began to veer off, angling to rise higher into the sky.

The camos did not want the saucer to leave, and opened full fire on it, with all of their automatic rifles.

Their weapons did absolutely nothing, as the saucer completed its turn, and with absolutely blinding speed, went from a total standstill, to faster than the blink of a eye, vanishing from sight, as it went streaking off into the sky.

THE WHITE HOUSE - WASHINGTON, D.C.

OVAL OFFICE

The two Secret Service agents reacted with surprise, as multiple washes of bright blue light signaled the arrival of the Orvani Commander, President Bensen, the elderly Orvani from the Roswell crash, and one other Orvani, this one unknown to any of the people present.

"What the hell is going on?" Bensen asked, sternly, as he walked up to the new Orvani. "What is all this about?" he asked.

The new Orvani looked to the assembled group, and addressed them.

"It's about the truth..." he began. "And about why it will never leave this room." he added, now turning to face the Commander, looking straight at him.

THE WHITE HOUSE - WASHINGTON, D.C.

OVAL OFFICE

All eyes looked to the new Orvani, as the elderly Roswell survivor scratched the side of his head, as he moved closer to the new Orvani.

"Yes... the truth... tell us about the truth!" Bensen ordered.

The new Orvani smiled slightly, as he nodded.

"As you wish." he began. "But first... maybe you should ask the old man here, what REALLY caused his ship to crash in your desert." he added, as now everyone faced the Roswell survivor.

"Well?" Bensen prodded.

"It's true... my ship did not crash because of any damage inflicted upon it, or from a systems failure... it was sabotage... I crashed my ship intentionally." he stated.

"What? But why?" Bensen asked.

"Because I AM one of the Brights... a Designer. I knew what we had done to our species... the fatal flaw in our Grand Design... how we intentionally reduced the natural lifespan of our entire species, to forcefully accelerate our intellectual advancement. When my ship passed through this system, our scans confirmed that the humans were a roughly Orvanoid species, and a biological scan of the planet confirmed that the humans were longer-lived than the Orvani population. I had to make up for what we had done... I had to make sure that the scientists on Orvan had the chance to learn about the human species... in the hope that the humans could help us solve our problem." he added. "So... my ship crashed, and after I was located, my ship's remains and I, were taken to the facility known as Area 51. Once there, I learned the human's languages, and was able to repair enough of my equipment to contact Orvan. I struck a deal with the humans... if they allowed some humans to be transported to Orvan, for study, I would not only remain on Earth, but would teach your people certain things about our technology and culture." he stated.

"My God..." Bensen began. "So it's true... Project Serpo... there ARE 12 people... humans, on Orvan!" he said.

"Well, 11 made it to Orvan... one of them became violently ill en route, and died. Two more died within 8 months of arriving on Orvan, and all but two others have since died of old age. Two still remain alive... extremely old and frail, but alive. The group you called the Majestic 12, are now the Majestic 2." he added. "But even as we studied you on Orvan, I knew that we could not allow what we had done, to be replicated by your own scientific community... that is why I sent for routine missions to Earth, to take random samplings of your population, and examine them... to make sure that your own people were not experimenting with that kind of genetic manipulation... for if you had done what we had done, your species would be facing the same problem we are now." he stated.

"The abductions?" Bensen asked.

"Yes." the elderly Orvani continued. "But not all of them were ordered by me... there are some among my people who are far more desperate, and they have been abducting your people, and impregnating them, and then removing the fetal humans from the parents, maturing them on Orvan... hoping to create a hybrid race... Orvani, infused with human DNA... human longevity." he added.

"But why keep this covered up? We would not have threatened you in any way!" Bensen wondered.

"WE were the ones who ordered it covered up... on BOTH sides." the new Orvani now stated. "Because people fear that which they cannot understand. Your people would fear advanced Orvani technology, and my people would not understand why there are members of an inferior species on our world, and would fear our attempt to create a new hybrid species." he explained. "Can you imagine the global panic that would erupt on Orvan, if the population knew that within three generations, our entire species will be dead?" he asked.

"That's why my requests for access to Orvan's database were blocked... and why I had to rely on a human informant for my information... and why you had to hire the Umnuvars to kill him." the Commander realised.

"Actually... I hired the Umnuvars to kill him, and block both you and the President." the elderly survivor stated, to a shocked audience.

"WHAT?" everyone called out, in unison, looking to him.

"Yes." the elder began. "You see... it was essential that you all thought it was a human that was leaking the information to you... that way, the Secret Service would go after HIM, thinking that HE was the leak. I knew that the other Brights on Orvan sometimes recruited Umnuvar agents to do their dirty deeds, so I brought them on, to fool you into thinking it was the Brights back home that had him killed. I was the real informant... I gave that man all the information he gave to you." he added. "And it worked... because none of you knew that I was the one who provided all this information."

"This is why we worked so hard to keep you from discovering us." the new Orvani began. "We knew when your President Kennedy was elected, we had to act, or risk having your species discover us." he stated.

"Wait a minute...you're not saying... you mean YOU killed Kennedy?" Bensen asked.

"President Kennedy was an extremely pro-space program President... we knew if he remained in power, it would only be a matter of time, before your people began to aggressively explore beyond your own world. We felt that with Kennedy out of the way, your space efforts would be held back enough to satisfy our needs." the new Orvani added. "Unfortunately, it didn't work the way we'd hoped... your people did make it to the surface of your moon... too close for us, as we have active mining operations on the dark side of your moon, as well as in your asteroid belt. We had to make sure you did not get close." he stated.

"I think I remember hearing stories, about how Armstrong and the moon landing parties reported seeing craft following them, in orbit, and being watched, on the surface." Bensen added.

"All true." the new Orvani added. "We had to keep you off of the moon, for as long as possible... that's why we had to assume control of NASA, and from the shadows, "guide" your space efforts, so that you remained as close to your own world as possible... we made sure that your far-seeing telescopes were never aimed towards Zeta Reticuli, and that any signals or images within range of SETI were scrambled. Any attempts to counter our efforts were... dealt with. The numerous mirror malfunctions on the Hubble telescope? The results of trying to aim it towards the Orvani System. Every time your people tried to look where we did not want you to look, we intervened, to prevent it from happening." he said.

The Secret Service agents now stood directly behind the new Orvani, as he looked to the Commander.

"But you..." he began. "You would not leave well enough alone... you had to go digging for information, and bring all this out into the light." he added, as with one blindingly quick movement, reached for the sidearm of the Secret Service agent to his left, and swiped it from him, and with a series of quick movements, readied the semi-automatic pistol for firing, as he aimed it at the Commander's head. "Thankfully, this will all end here, and never leave this room." he added, as everyone looked on, stunned.

"That's not really true." the elder stated, as the new Orvani looked to him, still aiming the pistol at the Commander. "Unfortunately for you, Sir... my mental privacy has been turned off the entire time you've been speaking... my mind was fully open... which means that everyone on this entire planet has just heard what has been said here... every last person on this world... human and Orvani alike. And since my neuronics were also broadcasting, a copy of this entire meeting is on its way to Orvan itself, as we speak... that "global panic" on Orvan you were so worried about? You may want to prepare for it... soon." he added.

-- TO BE CONTINUED --

What kind of mental broadcasting was the older Orvani do? And what was the effect of it on the humans listening? (I mean, would it have paralyzed them the way it did Bensen every time he got scanned?) Even THAT could cause chaos, and if that accompanies learning about this nasty secret, the panic is going to be that much worse!

(I mean, would it have paralyzed them the way it did Bensen every time he got scanned?) Even THAT could cause chaos, and if that accompanies learning about this nasty secret, the panic is going to be that much worse!

Remember... the Orvani's neuronic implants allow EVERYTHING their brains process, to be instantly shared with each other, in realtime... that's how they can learn so remarkably fast.

But with that level of open technology, comes the need for individual privacy... any individual Orvani can "close" their mind, and in doing so, confine their thoughts and experiences to themselves... they do this when they sleep, for instance. When their minds are fully open, their neuronics are all linked.

Since the neuronics ARE technological devices, that by definition, are designed to transmit, the elderly Orvani was transmitting the entire meeting to everyone. The computers on the Orvani ships then broadcasted that transmission to the humans, through our available audiovisual and net channels, while at the same time, sending a copy of that transmission to Orvan.

Oh, so the elderly Orvani did a news broadcast rather than screwing with humans' heads. That makes more sense!

THE WHITE HOUSE - WASHINGTON, D.C.

OVAL OFFICE

The new Orvani continued to aim the gun to the Commander's head, as he suddenly turned, and aimed it at the elderly survivor, visibly angry.

"Do you have any idea what you have just done?" he asked, barely able to contain his boiling rage. "Do you understand the scope of civil unrest that will erupt now, on Orvan? Have you any idea how large the scope of mass panic will be?" he asked.

"It is true." the elder began. "It will be a long, hard, night... but we will work through it... we must, for what we face now, is no longer a dark demon of our past, but the truth, thrust into the light, for all to see. We have a right to know the truth about ourselves, and the humans have the right to know the truth about us, and our impact on their world. WE created this mess... it is our task to clean it up." he added.

Unknown to the new Orvani, the two Secret Service agents walked up right behind him, when he was addressing the elder, and as the Orvani began to now ready himself to fire the weapon he held, the sound of another semi-automatic pistol clicking was heard, and the Orvani turned, to see the barrel of the second agent's weapons facing him, right between the eyes.

"Sir... I suggest you drop the weapon." the agent stated, calm and firm.

As the new Orvano hastily looked around, trying to figure a way out, the Commander reached into a "pocket" that until now, had been invisible, but now revealed itself as nothing more than a thin slit, and pulled out a very thin needle-like rod, that looked as if it were made of both metal and glass, and was about a foot long. As he drew the rod, and aimed it at the new Orvani, it began to glow an intense bright pink.

Upon seeing the rod, the look on the new Orvani's face was one of frustrated resignation.

""Sir... they asked you to drop the weapon." the Commander stated, as finally, the new Orvani loosened his grip on the gun, dropping it to the floor. "Agents, if you please... take this man into custody, under charges of consipracy, conspiracy to commit conspiracy, the murder of President John F. Kennedy, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice." he added, as Bensen nodded, prompting the two agents to handcuff the new Orvani, and begin to haul him away, as he shouted out at the elder, as he was led away...

"This is not over! It's just begun! The blood of all who die on Orvan are now on YOUR hands!" he spat.

Finally, the Orvani had been led out of the room, and the elder now stepped forward, facing President Bensen.

"Mister President... I cannot hide from what I have done, as well... I surrender myself to your forces, to accept punishment, for the murder of the human informant." he stated.

Bensen looked to the alien before him, angry, yet sympathetic.

"I understand what you have done... and why you had to do it... and yes, I even thank you for it. But I wish it could have been done without the death of a human... an innocent man." he said. "Very well... consider yourself under arrest, Sir." he added.

"What will we do now?" the Commander asked, now replacing the rod back into his pocket, as the glow dimmed to nothingness once again.

"I must remain here, to face punishment for what I have done." the elder said, turning to face the Commander. "But your next task is clear... you must return to Orvan. You must try and calm the chaos that will soon envelop our world. Help the people back home weather the storm that is coming." he said.

The Commander and the elder shared a long and deep look, as two Capitol Police Officers entered the room, and moved to stand behind the elder, cuffs ready.

The elder extended his right hand out to the Commander, and spread all three fingers out holding them up, at eye level, as the Commander repeated the gesture, bringing his own hand out to touch the fingers of the elder.

"I thank you, Sir, for what you have done... your help. You will be missed. I shall do my very best, to help our people face the light of truth, so that we may never again, fall into the darkness of deciet and treachery." the Commander said, as both Orvani men shared a nod, as the elder now withdrew his hand, and offered both his hands willingly, to the policemen, who led him gently away, leaving only the Commander and the President in the room.

"Well..." Bensen offered, after a long pause.

"It has been quite a day, hasn't it?" the Commander offered back.

Bensen turned to directly face the Commander.

"If you're going to Orvan... I'm going with you." Bensen stated, serious.

"What?" the Commander asked, not really knowing if Bensen was genuinely serious, or just outwardly appearing that way.

"You heard the man... there are still two surviving members of the Majestic 12, on Orvan. I want to see them. I have a right to see them. And I demand to see them." Bensen answered. "They have a right to see one of their own kind again."

For a long moment, the Commander looked into the eyes and face of the President, studying the man's intent, until finally, the Commander nodded, resigned to the fact that he could not argue with Bensen, and would not do so... his people had done enough to hurt the human race already.

"Very well." the Commander began, softly. "We will host a press conference on all of this soon, before we leave." he added, as he nodded, taking his leave of Bensen, as he casually walked out of the Oval Office, leaving the President to look after him, and ponder the full impact of what had taken place today, in this room.

WHOA...the president leaving the PLANET--it's a very bold move, but I have to wonder what that means for him in terms of security, not to mention for the U.S. and world politics.

(Though I admit I'd love to actually see Orvan!)

I have to wonder what that means for him in terms of security, not to mention for the U.S. and world politics.

Well, the Orvani have already saved his life twice...

Besides... would YOU attempt to take hostile action against someone who had the protection of someone with the Orvani's power? :D

One would hope not, anyway...but people are crazy! I can see someone going after the US in some way, especially if they know now that the Orvani are divided and thus have human political weaknesses.

^

I'd be more worried about what will become of the Orvani on Earth, while the President is away.

And I believe you said you wanted to see a shot of Orvan... here it is...
