Just about to say the same thing.
I agree. Even if I did stoke it with a message, this is an SGU thread.
6 chevrons (let's get new rating system pronto, this one stinks). Just a 0 to 10 would be fine.
Anyway, I enjoyed it for the characters and the mystery. And, those are mostly the reasons I've enjoyed it so far. That'll carry the show so far but at some point they're going to have to switch gears. Crank up the drama and action. And, no, I don't mean going to visit the ex! So, what we're getting now will for a bit more but not a lot more. If they can make the transition, this show may do ok. If they don't, the show won't make it past a season. We shall see.

I appreciate they're trying to move away from man in makeup alien of the week... but man I'd love a bit of danger. Even BSG with its very real dramas of water etc. had the Cylon menace.
The dilemma here is that truly alien aliens are expensive, while bumpy-foreheaded humanoids are (relatively) cheap. It's an old problem, of course; I always get a chuckle when scientists complain about all the humanoid aliens in sci-fi shows (okay geniuses, you figure out how to pay for a realistic intelligent arachno-gastropod on-screen, and we'll get right on it.)
The sentient dust devil we saw in Air Part III is probably an indication of the sort of thing they might be doing - incorporeal or near-incorporeal aliens, things we wouldn't immediately recognize as life forms at all, who can be rendered with a fairly simple VFX. Another way to limit costs would be to depict only one alien, not dozens, a single individual who can act as an ongoing threat. That would work with the premise of the show anyway, since this small group is unlikely to be able to fight off an organized, militaristic species in large numbers.
Personally I'm content to wait for it. I assume the writers will get there after the characters figure out Destiny knows what it's doing. Probably we will get more hints some time around episode seven (November sweeps), leading up to the show's mid-season "big event" in episode ten.
Forget aliens. ANYTHING interesting has to happen, very very soon.
Watching dull random faces say their name followed by 'I shouldn't be here', or whining about how they knew they were going to die in space, is not interesting. Watching Rush act like a stupid annoying **** is not interesting, nor is seeing Young visit his wife zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Apparently Darkness and Light were supposed to be one episode, but it ran long and they made two. Whoever made that decision needs to give up his or her creative input on the show. Darkness was the biggest waste of time on Stargate, full stop. Absolutely nothing happened, except more tedious arguing and more 'we're going to die' moaning.
Air Part 3 was good because they were on alien planet and at least had a mission. The setting was again, rather boring, but at least things were happening. At least there was mystery and intrigue. And the ending was excellent, with the drama of the timer running out. Darkness was a pointless, waste of 40 minutes zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Oh and the senator's daughter... she needs to die very very soon. Horribly annoying character and horribly bad actress.

She's doing a reasonable job of playing the character, no particular qualms yet. What the character says or does is not up to her as an actress, so based solely on her performance, she's certainly as good as or better than most of the cast Stargate has hired since about SG-1 season 7. As are most of the rest of the cast.
Well I nearly completely agree on every point. I didn't have much problems with that woman as an actress, but basically every other point I think sums up what's wrong with the show.
Just watched it on Hulu, and I thought it was very impressive. I really like Rush as a character, and enjoyed the scatchy tension between him and the others. Having him go through coffee and cigarette withdrawal was a nice touch.
I also loved the episode for the brilliant visuals, especially the scene showing the ship aero-braking on the edge of a gas giant. I really like how this series is reintroducing us to the wonders of space, instead of making it drab and everyday, as so many SF series has done.
Overall, I'm liking this series very much so far.
