sf/f TV development news - 2015

Yep, the first one, a miniseries (with potential to continue) called Ascension premieres Monday. January 16, their new series based on 12 Monkeys premieres. Later next year their are also doing a miniseries based on Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End, a series based on James S.A. Corey's The Expanse book series, and another original concept space series called Killjoys. They'll also be doing a third season of Defiance.

It's tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I have to admit, even though I've only seen a couple of trailers, I'm already kind of hoping it goes beyond the initial mini. I've liked what I've seen, and I find the initial concept very intriguing, and it seems like something that deserves more than just six hours to fully explore.

Whereas I find the concept completely bizarre and ridiculous -- an interstellar starship launched secretly in the early '60s? It's going to have to do a lot of work to earn my suspension of disbelief.

Dark Matter - Syfy Announces Cast

Syfy today announced casting of the new acquired scripted series Dark Matter, which will feature Melissa O’Neil (Broadway production of Les Miserables), Marc Bendavid (Bitten), Anthony Lemke (White House Down), Alex Mallari Jr. (Robocop) and Jodelle Ferland (Twilight) with Roger Cross (The Strain) and Zoie Palmer (Lost Girl).

In Dark Matter, the crew of a derelict spaceship is awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal and hidden secrets.

The only names there that caught my attention were Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer. Premise is a little generic, but it has potential.

I like the idea of a martial arts fantasy show on network prime time. It could be a total disaster, or it could be really cool.

Spin would have to be changed a lot to work as a miniseries, since the novel spans over half a century of time.

Then again, Vortex bizarrely retconned the duration of the Spin from decades down to a mere five years. Maybe with TV-series possibilities in mind?

I really liked Billy Burke on Revolution, but the premise of Zoo doesn't do much for me.
