sf/f TV development news - 2013

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of the evil Dorothy & Co. Oz show. I like apocalyptic stuff and I've enjoyed most of Orci/Kurtzman's stuff, so I might give that one a chance.

That is interesting. At first I thought of The Two Georges, but in this one not only was the war fought and lost, but we are still fighting for independence-- presumably not in an all-out war, if it says the war was lost. Definitely an odd project for ABC.

I wonder what the reaction will be if the ongoing war is basically a terrorist front fighting against the British regime ruling the colonies.

The modern day rebels using IRA, Al Qaeda/Hezbollah tactics.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Weird.

Is it really any more odd than Once Upon A Time or Agents of S.H.E.I.D?

Well, it seems so to me. OUAT is derived from Disney versions of fairy-tale characters. SHIELD does strike me as odd, too, but it's derived from a hyper-successful theatrical movie. But an ongoing alternate universe story about losing the Revolutionary War? Definitely an odd choice for a mainstream network.

I think the other major factor that makes OUAT and SHIELD not be so strange for ABC is that Disney owns ABC and Disney owns Marvel.

It makes sense that they would make use of properties they own to fill programming on the major broadcast network they own. It also keeps those brands in the public eye more to generate interest for other ventures set in those universes or using characters/themes from them.

Once Disney bought LucasFilms it pretty much became almost guaranteed that if a live action series set in the Star Wars unvierse happened it would be on ABC (and about a month ago stories did come out that ABC was in talks for such a series).

Hmmm, could be interesting.

NBC Developing Drama Based On Oni Press’ ‘Ghost Projekt’ Graphic Novel

This is kind of timely with the current US-Russia cooperation in the effort to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons. NBC has put in development Ghost Projekt, a drama based on the Oni Press graphic novel series written by Joe Harris and illustrated by Steve Rolston. Written by John Glenn and feature writer/director André Øvredal (Troll Hunter), the show centers on an American UN weapons inspector and a Russian FSB agent who are forced to team up to chase a group of thieves before they end up spreading dangerous supernatural material stolen from an old abandoned Soviet weapons lab. Feature writer/director Øvredal will direct the pilot and serve as co-executive producer. Glenn will executive produce with Close On Mondays’ Eric Gitter for Universal TV and Oni Press’ sister company Closed On Mondays, which has a first-look deal at the studio.

Nobody seems to have thought of the obvious: if the US had remained a British colony, then by now the US would totally own the UK and we would be your beeyotch.

No wait ...

Bryan Singer To Produce Modern Monster Drama Project For Syfy

Syfy has teamed up with X-Men director Bryan Singer and his Bad Hat Harry Prods. (House) for Creature At Bay, a drama series project, which will be developed as a 90-minute pilot script. It will be written by John Cabrera, co-creator of Warner Bros.’ award winning sci-fi digital series H+, also produced by Bryan Singer. Creature At Bay is set in the wake of the US military taking down a giant, rampant creature — a modern-day “Kaiju” monster – just off the Northern California coast. A middle-management Undersecretary from the California Emergency Management Agency is charged with leading the clean-up efforts as the small town becomes the focus of the entire world.
