Welcome to a new Sci-Fi & Fantasy Avatar Contest!

Movie posters for science-fiction films and shows serve as portals to alternate realities, enticing viewers with glimpses of futuristic worlds and captivating visuals. They play a crucial role in setting the tone, sparking curiosity about the show or movie, and drawing audiences into the imaginative realms of sci-fi storytelling. There’s so much variety — ranging from classic hand-drawn posters to the floating head posters from the 90s to the minimalist and abstract posters we often see today. I want to see your absolute favorites, well-known classics or obscure hidden gems.

Let’s again go with three entries per member max. Please indicate what movie/show we’re seeing in your avatar(s), if that’s not obvious. Voting will go up in about a week.

As always, these contest rules apply: Keep the size of your entries at 200 pixels by 200 pixels and/or 1 Mb maximum file size. And of course, keep it safe for work.

Let me know if there’s any questions about the theme. And most importantly: Have fun!

Ooh, nice. I ran a contest with poster art, as well, but that was years ago, so it's okay to do it again. Also probably good to limit entries despite the high number of posters to choose from, otherwise I alone would probably flood the contest.

But just to clarify, are you limiting this to science fiction, or are fantasy and/or supernatural horror also fair game?

I suspected that something like this came up before. Zwei Dumme, ein Gedanke, I guess. ;) Had a handful of other ideas, but this just seemed like the most fun thing to do right now.

I assume fantasy is OK?
Yes! Definitely fantasy too! Sorry, I worded that confusingly in the first post. :)

So many iconic posters... I barely know where to begin!

Let's start with...

Back to the Future, by Drew Struzan
That’s the first one that came to my mind as well! Had this on my wall in my first apartment away from home twenty years ago and used to stare at it for ages while listening to music. So it’s kind of etched in my memory at this point.

Oh, it's cool. For one, my contest was back in spring of 2021, so a good three years ago. And second, there's just so many cool posters out there. I just checked, and I alone actually had done over a hundred different avatars based on posters for that contest, though I only entered four of them (I did an entry limit, too, because I very well couldn't do a hundred entries).

Of course, this means I have a good archive to pick from, and I obviously won't just pick the ones I entered back then (because that would be boring).

So here:

I don't mean to interrupt your all's contest, but could you explain what's going on here? What is the origin of the 3D information? Was this a three-dimensional poster display, back when the film was released, or was it something else?

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any confusion. I created this parallax animation. Just wanted to add some depth to the wonderful illustration. The additional image information needed to do that was photoshopped by myself. Believe me, it’s much less clean than it might appear; the small image size helps a ton in hiding inaccuracies.

@Starscape! Awesome to see you enter an avatar!

No confusion at all, looks great! Thanks for the info. :techman:

Some awesome entries so far! I’m going to post the voting thread later tonight tomorrow. So if anyone’s still thinking about entering an avatar, now’s your time. :)

EDIT: The voting is now up here!
