"Sex and the City" Not BBS-worthy?

You should have bought her a Star Trek box set instead, or some other box set from a sci-fi series; at least a sci-fi show has better female characters than Carrie Bradshaw & Co. (usually.)

Why do geeks seem so intend on pushing their habits on other people? My missus would have said what is ze shit ? if I'd have got her a sci-fi box set for her birthday instead of sex and the city. The aim of a present is to get people something they would like rather than something you'd like them to like...

^Wouldn't it make more sense for men to just not pay to see a movie they have no interest in ? Let the womenfolk go with their friends if they really must go to see a two hour fashion advert.

He is right that if you want to watch something with strong female characters, Sci-Fi is a lot better than Sex and the City.

So? - she doesn't watch Sex and the City because she wants strong characters - she watches it because she wants something light and fluffly with nice clothes in it. It's her form of escapism. It's comparing chalk and cheese - and still doesn't get away from the fact that present buying habits shouldn't be formed by your disapproval of her viewing choices.

I am only commenting on the strong female characters part, not the rest.

Personally, I would not buy my (hypothetical) girlfriend a boxed set of a television show I didn't already know she liked. I also believe, however, that gifts should reflect the giver so I would not buy my (still hypothetical) girlfriend a Sex and the City boxed set, but then I would probably not have a Sex and the City fan for a girlfriend in the first place.

That's fair enough - it's just for some reason in geekdom forums, I see a lot of people saying "my girlfriend doesn't like X, how do I get her to like X?" - it bugs me - how about you leave the woman alone and let her like what she likes.....

Do you make them fill out a questionnaire or do you have some fixed idea about what a sex in the city fan is like?

I would encourage someone I was with to watch the shows I like with me, sure, and I'd try to watch the shows she likes with her but no couple's tastes are 100% compatible.

I have a fixed idea about people who didn't immediately stop watching when it became apparent that the characters are size queens, yes.

I personally would never see this film, or the television show. Why? Probably because every woman I've ever known who listed it as their favorite show was a shallow douche bag who thought she was God's gift to men despite being a 5 or less on a 10-point scale. I tended to notice the pattern after a while.

Not that all women who like the show are that way. Just the ones who loooooove the show and think it's the best thing ever.

Ever notice how there is no equivalent show for men out there? I don't mean to sound bratty, but where is my show that celebrates the power of being a guy and is all about making guys feel superior?

^TV is not for guys anymore, that's why. The only shows I can think of that are genuinely made with men in mind all have the words "World Wrestling Entertainment" in their titles.

The male leads in most TV shows now are worthless sops whose only vaguely reedeming quality is that they're good looking.

I'd say LOST has some strong alpha male types that worth watching. Hurley would appear the least male but I don't see even him as a Cosmo drinking fufu man.
I'd say damn near every man on LOST is man's man.

That may be the only show though.

Maybe Men in Trees had some? I only saw two episodes so I'm no authority for it.

Well if I was into homoerotic panto... maybe...

I beg your pardon but I happen to be a DEEP douche bag thankyouverymuch.

**insert obvious comment here**

Why would a "man's man" need to watch Television for that sort of affirmation ? Isn't it more likely to be bedwetting whiners who like to think they are an alpha man....

Well, let's see.

Jack - Pussified by Kate. If he was a man he would have shagged her in the pilot.

Sawyer - Used to be okay, but now pussified by Kate.

Hurley - Pussy to begin with.

Locke - He let his dad steal his kidney, ruin his relationship with his girlfriend and then throw him out of a window without doing a damned thing about it. Plus he's a nutjob.

Michael - One word: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!

Boone - The only girlfriend he could get was his sister!

Sayid - Okay, not so bad.

Jin - Again, not so bad.

Desmond - Oh Penny, where's Penny, Penny, Penny, fracking Penny.

Ben - Nutter.

Mr. Eko - Started off okay but then went nuts.

Charlie - Did the right thing in the end, but seriously it took him that long to figure out how he felt about Claire ?

So, really, the foreigners (i.e. the non-Americans) are the ones that come out the best. But male characters have a second category, any male character who isn't pussified is a monster instead. Sayid the murderer, Jin the hired thug, Eko the gang leader, Charlie the drug addict who helped kidnap Claire etc.

Maybe Men in Trees had some? I only saw two episodes so I'm no authority for it.

Never seen it.

It's usually only secondary male characters that get treated right. Thankfully for every John Shepard there's a Ronon Dex to balance him out. For every Lee Adama (oh no, I'm married to a hot woman and my hot best friend wants me too!) or Bill Adama (I can't run my ship because a woman I haven't even f***ed yet is missing) there's a Tyrol. Though, that brings up the monster thing again - he beat Cally up, broke her jaw and then badmouthed her after she died.

Even Jack Bauer cries and moans all the time.

Well, I don't. I just choose not to watch much new television instead. I would just like to see some lead male characters being written as something other than wusses or monsters. Write them as well as some of the female characters I mentioned above.

I saw it on opening night. I felt sorry for the few men there who were dragged by their SOs though.

They should have at least brought an iPod or legos or something.

That would be so much fun. Bring in tons of lego kits to a really dull romantic comedy and see what you can build in the dark in two hours.

Let's see, I got my guy a deadpool figurine and the new Lego Indiana game and we still didn't go see SATC.

I'm just hoping when I "have" to go see Dark Knight I get a ghost rider figure.

I was pointing out that there are shows where the men behave like men and not like metrosexuals. An Alpha Male wants to see himself represented on TV just as any other group would. Not for any affirmation.

Just because they show some softness doesn't make them non-Alphas. Sure you picked an example of their softer side but its not a side they are contantly displaying. They have flaws sure but they are not pussies, well ok except Boone who I admit I forgot all about and I might concede Hurley.

^Neither Jack nor Sawyer are willing to stand up and take what they really want and Michael and Desmond look like they're about to burst in to tears at any moment.

I'd just like something in between outright evil and wuss.

^^^
Taking what they want=rape
That can't be what you mean.
Sawyer did get it and Jack does to it seems.
Just because they showed some retraint doesn't make them pussies. It shows some actually gentleman qualites beneath thier brash exteriors they show to everyone.

In all fairness Desmond viewed himself as quite cowardly to begin with. His character has gone from coward to fighter. Fighting for what he loves, Penny, has some nobleness.

Michael was a slacker and granted not really an alpha but he wasn't a total wimp either.

I'll leave it at that as I dont' want to contribute any further to totally derailing this thread.
