I just read it, and something that doesn't make sense to me is how could

Mitchell and Kirk be Academye friends? In the original reality, Kirk and Mitchell were friends at the Academy, and Kirk attended the Academy from 2250 -2254. However, in this reality, Kirk delayed entering the Academy until 2255 - wouldn't Mitchell be several years ahead of him, or already graduated?

Mitchell was one of Kirk's drinking buddies and didn't attend the Academy until after Kirk did. It was either that or jail

...Kirk was no longer a cadet at the time he and Mitchell met. Lieutenant Kirk was an instructor and Gary Mitchell was one of the students taking his course. ("Watch out for Lieutenant Kirk. In his class, you either think or sink.")

Whatever. The stars of the show are still the stars of the show - except Uhura, who's more important than she used to be.

I'm not sure being Spock's girlfriend makes her more important.
