Seven page preview for nuTrek comic...

I like the look of it - it's channelling a nice mix of the original and the new. One noticeable thing - Shatner and Nimoy are no longer competing for airtime and they don't have to pay other actors to appear. It would be nice if perhaps Spock didn't steal half of Uhura's lines and just leave her with hailing frequencies open and I love you Mr Spock. :P

Actually, 10 male characters seem to feature compared to just 2 women, none of whom have any lines so far. I think they need to put in a bit more effort to even up the sexes. I don't think it's right to apply sixties sexual sensibilities to a 21st century reboot.

I don't know...I was really hoping the reboot would be more than just a retelling of the same stories with a slightly different look and arc. As a writer myself I'm well aware of the adage that "there is nothing new under the sun," but I think they could make a little more effort. And I really wish Scotty was more than just comic relief.

The artwork is excellent. The "beauty shot" of the Enterprise was very nice. Even if she did look a little more like our older, more familiar lady than the new one....

Definately peeked my interest. Makes me wonder how they'll handle episodes dealing with a characters past, especially Kirks since his is different from Prime Kirks. Can't wait for them to do 'The Menagerie'.

Would be interested in their take on Conscience of the King. Will be picking up the first issue when it becomes available for the iPad.

Damnit.
I swore a solemn oathie thing to not even touch that revisionist crap. But...
That preview was sort of...interesting.
And the comic is out tomorrow.
i dunno.
If I'm lucky, it'll sell out before my next paycheck. Then I won't have to hate myself for indulging in the e-vile reboot wrongness.
sigh.

I gots to do something about my impulse control issues.

Do what I always do in such circumstances: Go buy something! Regretting it later is half the fun!

I had a quick browse of the issue on the shelf as mine is on order. It looks good fun but I hope nobody will consider it a spoiler if I mention that I didn't spot Dr Denher.

I know I voiced concerns about them being sexist earlier but her seeming absence caught me by surprise (I only browsed so she might still be in the background somewhere). The movie had no Rand, no Chapel (apart from name check), no T'Pau, and no Number One and the first retold story has gained two male characters (Keenser and Chekov) and one woman (I don't think Uhura was in the original) but lost its principle female lead. Maybe they won't bother with the female yeoman in the Galileo 7 at all.

Even if they didn't want two super beings in the story, Denher still had a significant role to play as the psychiatrist monitoring Mitchell's descent into madness. It's possible that she will feature in the second issue or they could use Dr Noel to fulfill the same purpose instead. I'll be very disappointed if they start a pattern of treating the female characters as second class characters unless they are a love interest. I want to see Scotty with some female engineers and some female security guards running around.

Well... I think there are two super-beings in the story.

I have the issue on the ipad...

Pros:

*Nice to have a monthly Trek comic again
*Quality artwork

Cons:

*Pretty bare story (took less than five minutes to read)
*Lack of women
*Lack of aliens (outside of Keenser), without a budget it would've been nice to see some aliens walking the Enterprise corridors.

Cool Bill. I'll get my copy at the weekend and read it properly. I find that most comic stories seem bare bones these days. I'm glad they are spending more than one issue on each story but I wonder if 3 issue arcs might give us a better chance to get our teeth into the stories.

Two super beings eh? Sounds groovy! Although if they wrote out Denher and gave the role to a male character (I'm guessing Keenser) then that is adding insult to injury. It must be a challenge to find writers that are more sexist than the writers from the sixties! Kudos!

If they're retelling TOS stories there's going to be a lot of "treating women as second class characters unless they're love interests."

So, Gary can beat Kirk at chess - this is actually somewhat in character - and Spock won't even play against the Captain. And as upperclassmen Mitchell and Kelso helped Kirk with his work rather than suffering through classes as his students.

That's right. This isn't my father's Trek. Nero's interference has altered everybody's lives. Unless they're a woman. The women must be portrayed exactly as they were in the sixties! In fact, they didn't really do much in the sixties episodes, let's not bother with them at all! :vulcan:

Whatever. The stars of the show are still the stars of the show - except Uhura, who's more important than she used to be.

I'm not sure being Spock's girlfriend makes her more important. More prominent sure. It allows her more story time but she's still basically a plot device for one of the stars.

Yup. This could change, though, in the next movie given the actress's slight rise in star power and/or story direction.

Got it, nice looking issue...only half the story is there though, and they probably could have made more dramatic changes.

Picked up my copy of Ongoing #1 yesterday. I liked it. Yay Keenser! Loved the tease about Dr Dehner! Now I'm wondering if McCoy handles things differently to Dr Piper? I ended up getting the Cover B (drawn, half Kirk/half Spock), assuming the photorealism montage Cover A will be on the trade reprint collection. I already have the Cover B Starfleet recruiting poster (with Andorian cadet) on pre-order for my issue #2.

And...

DEBUT ISSUE OF NEW “STAR TREK” COMIC SERIES SELLS OUT
Official Press Release

Within hours of release, IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products announced that STAR TREK #1, the debut issue of a brand new chapter in the new Star Trek universe, is sold out. Guided by Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci, this new series explores the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the 2009 film, and the first issue is going fast.

“Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money,” said Orci. “But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been. Join us!”

Star Trek fans nationwide are encouraged to check with their local comic retailer to get their copy of STAR TREK #1. A second printing of this hot debut issue is being rushed to comic stores and will feature a variant cover.
