Seven of Nine is back in ST: Picard

Nice bit of Voyager continuity during the opening horror show...
They can't find Icheb's cortical node, because he gave it to Seven in "Imperfection"
It's gonna be weird rewatching latter-day Voyager, knowing that this is how these characters end up.
Sarah Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate. Her son is dead and all she's living for is vengeance.

Not VOYAGER. The new PICARD show.

And given that it takes place some twenty years after VOYAGER, I don't think we need an explanation for why Chakotay is apparently nowhere in the picture.

It's been twenty years. People break up, move on, etc.

Oh THANK YOU for your explanation, Greg Fox! :techman:

Just fell on this very interesting article to read

And another one, as interesting as the previous:

It finally confirmed that Seven was supposed to be a lesbian character right the beginning but the plot was changed because some people have been feared to introduce a sexy female character who would be only interested in women. Result: we got Seven only interested in men.

How does it confirm she's a Lesbian? She could be bisexual.

Following a few links through articles there you come to an excerpt from a book called Star Trek as Myth which quotes Jery Taylor in a TV guide interview saying Seven wasn't a lesbian but it was something he wanted to do.

My reading of that quote is that given they have said they tried to introduce it several times - that they are for a *character* being a Lesbian not that specifically wanted Seven to be one (reading your post - maybe your reading is the same).

I'm inclined to wanting Seven portrayed so, so that bias is in my reading of the quote. It doesn't say she was unequivocally conceived so by him and can be seen as just wanting some character to be a lesbian. It's a very guarded producer's statement that doesn't name names or pin anyone down to anything specific. Polite noise, really. It's better than nothing and certainly a step forward for Trek but the usual slow ready to jump back baby steps the show does, like most shows, really.

My preference for a lesbian Seven is because bi-females often just end up with male characters in the final scene. Any activity with a woman is brief and secondary all too often and then for titillation of the audience and show some progressiveness. I'd prefer they did bi- male characters and gave them a male love interest as end game.

That said, Trek is no show I expect any relationship to be handled all that well regardless of pairing. Black Sails, much better show for portraying a spectrum of sexuality than many series. Better than Trek in any version.

I'm british - so I'm used to Lesbian, gay and Bi characters in family TV shows as a matter of course so Trek is very retro to me (and not in a good way).

Xena was bisexual too.

I can't blame Seven for being interested in women considering the list of instructions the Doctor had her memorize ("Wear this, do that, don't do this, don't say that ... ").

Can you blame her for giving up and throwing in the towel? She probably said, "Screw this! It's too complicated!" The poor thing had to resort to taking NOTES!

If you need a set of instructions in order to have a relationship with a guy, there's a problem. :shifty:

Come on, there's always someone afraid of something different. There are even women who attack men in whatever way if they think they're gay or bi because they're afraid they won't change or whatever their personal list is - even if they don't want to sleep with him. Is it okay to talk about that or is that being held back for Hugh in 2 weeks' time or whatever?

To be fair, her pairing with Chakotay always seemed forced. Whether or not this is due to Trek's continually horrid attempts to 'ship people or not... it works with the character's narrative and doesn't ruin canon or anything else. But she tried a guy and didn't like it and realized later on she was a lesbian. It's not a big deal. Apart from any male ex who felt used and abused. Like any gay guy who had dated another guy who then gets told "I'm not sure if I am gay or not" on the day he gets dumped, having been used the other guy inappropriately.

According to Jeri Ryan, Braga originally intended for Seven and Chakotay to be a couple. He then left to create "Enterprise" and a new showrunner came on board (the new showrunner wasn't interested in pursuing the romance).

Braga came back to write "Endgame" and tried to restart the romance. It ended up being awkward and forced in "Endgame".

I think Seven is just bisexual, which is likely typical for the turn of the 25th century (ala Jack Harkness).

And it's quite, quite terrifying to think that Jeri is roughly only 7-8 years younger than when the late Carrie Fisher was when she turned up in TFA (with Ming Na Wen a mere 3-4 years younger and Michelle Yeoh unbelievably 2-3 years younger). Even Kim Cattrall (Lt. Valeris) and Nana Visitor have hit the same age bracket as poor Carrie and both seem SO MUCH younger.

Even at the time it felt jarring and upsetting to see Carrie in her state in the ST - drug abuse, chain smoking, alcohol, a type A personality, not winning the 2nd round of the genetics lottery, and battling bipolar disorder for her entire life had hit her hard. :(:(:(:(
