Seth McFarlane wants to Reboot Trek on TV

I guess MacFarlane's upcoming Cosmos would be a better way to judge how he'd take on a sci-fi show than his half-dozen different variations on the theme of the deadbeat dad, but then again, perhaps not.

Since this thread has taken a left turn into bizarro land, I'll admit that I want to see some lunatic take the story of all six Star Wars movies and write an opera using John Williams' music, with lyrics in the original Klingon, and all the characters dressed as Klingons. :rommie:

And I have a funny feeling that somehow, somewhere, I heard of a lunatic who is doing just that. At least I hope I didn't think of something like that on my own.
Well someone actually did write a Klingon opera titled 'u', but beyond that it is none of those things.

I mean really, John Williams? Jerry Goldsmith is the only one for a Star Trek Klingon opera! John Williams can be there for the Star Wars... uh... let's say Wookiee operetta (Gilbert and Sullivan, in growls).

But Klingons are bombastic, and that's why Star Wars music fits. Needless to say, the lyrics would all be in Klingonese. :D

I don't actually like the 'adult' cartoons, they seem so immature compared to ones aimed at kids. Honestly, even the worst kids cartoon on today has more plot and less fart jokes than your average Adult Swim. And don't get me started on the animation...
However, if this happens, I think it would be a great refresher to see a Star Trek series that was animated (better than TAS) and funny. Why is everyone so insistent on drama anyway? It usually flops.

I don't know, I assumed Seth MacFarlane was talking about a live action Star Trek. Just as just because he's known for his comedy writing that doesn't mean he'd make it a comedy, I don't see anything saying he'd make it a cartoon.

I'd be very interested in a McFarlane Star Trek, he seems to be respectful enough as an actual fan to put in some genuine effort in trying to make a good product. I'm curious as to whether he'd go for an animated series or live action though.

Well, it would be nice, at least. 5 LA series and only one animation?

MacFarlane is a huge Trek fan, so he might do a new series justice, though I'd still be skeptical that he could refrain from making it raunchy.

My first thought about him doing it would be no, but if he is a big fan maybe he could do a better job than Berman, though in my opinion that wouldn't be exceptionally hard.

“But I’d love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience.” Seth Mcfarlane

Sounds good to me

this would excite me, and i hope it would be in the prime tng timeline or shortly after. Mcfarlane is clearly a fan and talented, and ron jones works with him on family guy, so we already have our new music man!

I'd be all for McFarlane given a crack at doing a new Star Trek show depending on what his idea for the series is (I don't care how great the creative team is if the premise just doesn't interest me. If the show's about Starfleet Academy, for example, then I don't want to see it). The guy's already proven to be an incredibly adept and capable writer and showrunner. Sure, his experience has been in comedy, but comedy is a far more difficult beast to write than drama. I'm certain he could easily handle a more dramatic series and then some.

Honestly the more I listen to him in other interviews and such - kinda have a different opinion of the guy. Personally I really don't like Family Guy and American Dad's "flavor" of humor that much. Kind of crude and low brow and just... eh. Not my cup of tea - although yeah there are some funny moments, but then I just sort of think "well, it's probably the same appeal a horror movie has - catharsis. Thinks you want to say or do or act like but can't in "polite society" so just live vicariously through this piece of media."

I think Roddenberry would be happy to see some of the "bright young minds" of today even considering this. If the Star Trek fan fic and role play communities are any indicator, there's no shortage of stories out there to tell.

Of course, look at the snit fits everyone throws over the slightest bit of "canon violation" the man will need to seriously be on egg shells.

People talk about a cluttered universe/timeline. I don't see it. Jeri taylor talked about the alpha quadrant being too small and crowded. My God, does she know how big it really is? Quadrants I believe were meant to be smaller even than sectors - hence only ship in the quadrant so that may explain some of the confusion. A prequil should have no baggage at all. Closed minded people. Avoiding canon is easy, just be original and don't cannibilize Trek.

Xortex, if you're a writer like you claim to be, you may want to learn how to spell prequel.
