News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Distant Origin and Masks are two premises that didn't work so well for Star Trek but seem like they would work better in a setting that has established itself as a little more silly.

Somewhere along the way, Star Trek fans seem to have lost the ability to have fun with Star Trek. They started treating it more like a solemn religion than a fantastical sci-fi adventure. I'll take "Distant Origins" or "Masks" over "The Inner Light" or "I, Borg" any day of the week.

What was the one where Janeway and Paris had lizard babies? That was definitely more of an Orville. :rommie:

"Threshold".

That's kind of a smug statement.

Some of the best Trek episodes are the fun episodes. Just the episodes that get overly cartoony or that make the universe ridiculous are not good episodes. At some point your universe has to have a little cohesion.

No reason a show can't have both fun episodes and serious philosophical episodes, and no reason a show has to be ridiculous to be fun.

I don't think "Masks" is a good episode but it is a really cool concept. I mean I did kind of enjoy seeing the ship being transformed. MIght have worked better if the Data characters were more interesting, especially the bad guy. Also the masks were silly looking. I almost felt sorry for Patrick Stewart having to wear it.

Masks is a weird episode which seems to depend much on my mood when I watch it. Several years back I watched it and really enjoyed it. Last year when doing a TNG re-watch, it didn't hold up very well at all.

I don't get why some people are getting down on Distant Origin though, that is a genuinely entertaining episode.

I like "Distant Origin" as well. Those aliens would have made for a good set of baddies to use in more episodes. I would have liked them better than the Hirogen or how the Borg were overused. Maybe people don't like it because it's a Chocoatay episode and the idea of Dino's evolving on earth and leaving is a pretty weird concept.

False alarm. She forgot to set her alarm clock and went back to sleep.
Best episode of 24 ever:

I actually like those wheels on it, reminds me of the landing gear on a CH-47 Chinook. It's always bothered me in Trek (and The Orville) that the shuttlecraft don't have wheels for use in deck handling.

Those wheels might just be for moving the prop around.

There was a conversation going on about this over on Reddit a couple of months ago. It starts off a little whimsical but then gets grounded quickly. Here's the gist of it:
This is neither here nor there, but it's interesting to note that DVDs still exist in the Orville universe. In Episode 7, on the Reddit planet, we saw the Orville crew at a magazine stand. One of the magazines is titled Absolutely Everything Home: The Home Electronics catalog — and in the corner it says: "GET A FREE DVD WITH ORDER."

It might not be the same DVD as what was invented on Earth in the late 20th century, but whatever it is they do have something called a “DVD” on that planet!

  • I'm sure they exist in museums on Earth as well in the 25th century.
    • I have no idea... BUT — I've noticed that usually the Blu-Ray release of most shows seems to occur about a month or two prior to the next season airing.

On the other hand, with a show like The Expanse, I think the Blu-Ray was released only ~3 months after the last episode of the season aired.

Does anyone know what Fox usually does?
      • a lot of fox shows are not even getting blu-rays anymore because people stopped buying them
        • Ugh. I'm definitely one for physical media. I loathe the concept of everything being digital where my copy is at the whim of some EULA or streaming agreement.

If the internet is out, I want to be able to pop in an disc and enjoy a movie or show. I have Netflix and Hulu, but physical media is something I won't give up.
          • Personally I don't have any problem with the content being digital; my gripe is that Blu-ray is the only medium currently, electronic or physical, that offers lossless audio quality, and the picture quality is noticeably higher than online stream as well.

When online streaming can reach the Blu-ray level of quality I would actually rather have that than a physical disc (since I'm terrible at keeping physical media organized), but regardless quality is always my top priority and, right now, Blu-ray offers the best possible picture and sound quality of all available media.
The one comment I bolded above kind of scares me for the blu ray release. Might never happen if true.
