News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Last night's episode was "New Dimensions". There wasn't really much of a sense of danger, but it was a fun episode. I felt sorry for Yaphit being passed over.

I'm sure others have commented on the pilot being promoted to engineering reminding them of some other sci-fi show from the late 80's/early 90's? If I were John I'd start worrying about some freak accident costing him his eyesight.

It becomes public knowledge, that's not quite the same thing

Well, thanks to #MeToo, anything that could be construed as casting-couch is now considered our business. There's a fine line between nepotism (which isn't a great thing either) and the casting couch (which is now a scandal suitable for mass public shaming and life-ruining).

I think you're reading a little more meaning into my post than I remember intending, although to be honest I actually think using the casting couch, whether explicitly or otherwise, actually IS plenty of reason to publicly shame someone

I like Joe Menosky and I like his work quite a great deal, though I know he's not to everyone's taste. He's been writing for Trek since the TNG days, and he really likes to write kind of out-there science fiction scripts that aren't dumb. This probably made him a pretty poor fit for STD.

His "Distant Origins," with Braga for Voyager was one of my favorites of that series. Because it was science fiction. And "out there."

Oh yeah, he wrote "Darmok" and a bunch of other eal good stuff for TNG. People who want to complain will bash "Masks" sometimes, but YMMV.

I think he's probably an excellent fit for The Orville, but we'll see.

Not sure how excited I am about this news. Wasn't Menosky part of the Discovery writing staff?
He was, though IMO his episode was one of the better ones, even if was guilty of one of the sillier retcons of the series
(Michael is the cause of Spock and Sarek not speaking to each other)

Menosky's work throughout Star Trek as a whole is kind of mixed. He's done some great episodes, he's done some rather forgettable ones too. I'm not worried about his addition to Orville, considering how many Voyager episodes him and Braga worked on together, it's clear they make a good writing team, which definitely won't hurt the show.

Never was as fascinated with "Darmok" as some folks.

Fair enough.

I'm in the middle ground with Menosky.

On the one hand he did "Darmok". On the other he did "The Chase" (one of the worst episodes of TNG), as well as other mediocre episodes.

On Voyager he wrote episodes like "Timeless" and "The Thaw" (the second features what I think is a very TOS idea for an ending), but then he wrote episodes like "The Gift" and "The Killing Game".

Seems he waste more good ideas on Voyager than that show deserved.

I like a lot of those episodes you guys mentioned . Darmok and Distant Origin are two of my favorite episodes in the entire franchise, and Timeless is one of the best Voyager episodes. It's not quite to the level of those three, but I actually think The Killing Game is pretty fun, and while it is a bit strange, Masks is an interesting episode, and features an IMO amazing performance (or should that be performances) by Brent Spiner. I look forward to seeing what Menosky does on The Orville.
Whose the blond behind J. Lee in the first picture there?

Looking over Menosky's ST credits:

"Darmok" is pretty much my favorite TNG episode, edging out over a dozen or so other really good ones.

"First Contact" is fun. "Distant Origin" and "The Thaw" are among VOY's top episodes. "Lethe" is one of DSC's better episodes so far.

Interesting that Menosky has Co-Executive Producer credit on DSC for "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars" but for nothing else.
