News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Kinda bummed we won't get episode 13 this year/season. It's not like it was preempted multiple times and is now running late into the year and the next show needs to start. Why does it need to end Dec 7 instead of Dec 14?

Viewership dwindles the closer you get to Christmas.

As noted, viewership tends to dwindle the closer you get to The Holidays and there could be any number of reasons why they can't air that episode, there could be something else scheduled for Dec 14 or it'd be up against something it wouldn't fare well against, pushing it December 21 and now you're even closer to Christmas and likely not going to see idea numbers and at that point it's utterly pointless to go on a hiatus for a few weeks to only show one episode before wrapping up the season. It's likely a calculated decision and since it's already renewed for a Season 2 and it's getting decent numbers I doubt dropping the episode is a sign of anything other than they just don't think there's a good chance to run it and see benefit.

The episode "The 37's" was moved to season 2 and out of the season finale spot.

Not just that. They moved 4 episodes produced in the first season to second season. The 37s was supposed to be the season finale, it became the season premier instead.

Do we know the reasons behind that?
You mean when Voyager did it? It was UPN who decided to withhold the episodes for their own reasons. Indeed, in all other countries the show aired, the withheld episodes were included with the first season anyway.

Yep, and December 14 is ten shopping days before Christmas. More people are going to be at the malls than home watching TV.

Voyager premiered in January 1995, a weird month to start a series. Maybe they moved the episodes both so they could shorten S1 and get a head start on S2.

DS9 premiered January 1993 and didn't need to do any such thing.

Different networks. UPN being it's own network, and VOY being it's inaugural offering as far as I remember could lead to different decisions than with a straight-to-syndication show.

Of course I'm just speculating.

Do we know the reasons behind that?

They produced 20 first season episodes, similar to what they did for DS9 first season. But UPN being a broadcast network, wanted to mix reruns and first run episodes more often and wanted to end the season in May so they only needed 16 episodes. They also wanted to start the second season earlier so moving those 4 episodes made sense for them.

They did the same thing with second season of VOY. They produced 26 episodes. But there was no way UPN was going to air 30 episodes (with the 4 carryover from 1st season). But this time they got advanced warning so they planned the 4 episodes that would be carried over to the 3rd season. The season premier of 3rd season (the second part of "Basics") and the 30th anniversary episode ("Flashback") were actually produced during second season. For the 3rd season they only produced 22 episodes to get in sync with UPN.

Heh...yeah, that was all over the news today. Honestly, I think this type of thing happens a lot more often than most civilians realize. These guys just happened to do this over a population center rather than the middle of an ocean somewhere.

I truly believe it's stunts like this that is the REAL reason that "The Brink" was cancelled. I really think that show hit a little too close to reality for some people's comfort. It had quite good writing, acting and production values, yet it got axed almost immediately after a second season had already been green-lit, with hardly an explanation as to why. It's also still not available on DVD/Blu-Ray yet, where as most HBO shows are put out in the stores about 6-9 months after being broadcast.

We ordered two "Planetary Union" t-shirts today from Amazon. One for me, one for my ten-year old son.

Oh, no way! There's Planetary Union shirts? Awesome!

And that story about that story about the Navy pilot drawing a penis in the sky is awesome. Weren't there people in some of the threads trying to say professional military officers don't act like the Orville characters do? Well now we have real world evidence that, yes they do. Boom, bitches!

Interesting. I never heard that part.

Never heard that part, either.

Wow! The future inspires the past!

That's great. :rommie: I love the first Twitter response-- or Instagram, or whatever it is.

A lot of mid season series start in January.

I don't think they're officially licensed by Fox, but I also found some uniform costumes. They don't even say The Orville on the page anywhere, "Unisex Warship Uniform". I'd be tempted if these were licensed, but when it comes to stuff like this I try to stick to the official stuff as much as possible.
