News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I guess MacFarlane hit it on the head, Discovery feels dark and dystopian. Like everything else on TV.

Second week and I still like it. Strange that the show is a comedy but isn't slapstick- it's only a little off from a real drama. Once again, the last few minutes got me interested in seeing more.

Okay, you guys! GET THIS!

"Orville" referenced "Star Wars" in the second episode. Which means: Star Wars is part of the universe.

Does that mean: "Star Trek" is part of that universe too? So the characters in this show know "Star Trek" as a TV show? Will they reference it?

... will they even confirm in one episode: "We have food synthesizers, pleasent looking ships, The Union, because our culture was inspired by Star Trek!" :)

*mind blown*

How is Bortus gay? He's from a single sex race (maybe) that lays eggs. They just happen to have male appearances and voices (so far)
When I wrote "gay", I meant from a human standpoint. Bortus is male gender and so is his husband. From the standpoint of Bortus' people, of course, "gay" likely has no meaning;

So, the composer this week, um, "homaged" the fuck out of TWOK - but over the episode title "Command Performance" (the last few seconds of the video below) he borrowed about seven or eight notes of an even better-known Trek piece...

Seriously, though, TOS did allow (in the writer's guide IIRC) for an episode or two to be set up by the previous one. They never did it, probably because of tight turnarounds and the programmers' whims of airing order.
^^^
They actually did in the first 6 or so episodes of the first season of TOS IF you watch them in Production order and not airdate order. Also originally TOS - "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" was planned to take place (and reference) the event at the ending of TOS - "The Naked Time" but yeah both GR and NBC didn't think having episodes tied together like that was a good idea. :(

Wow FOX had that removed fast (within 25 minutes of the OP.)

It just feels like Discovery is a product made by a corporation, with no real vision of its own. Like every idea was ran through focus groups before being committed to.

I sure hope I'm wrong.

Can't tell that based on the small bits we've seen--highly edited short collection of clips. We'll know more in several days!

I think that's an overstatement, but it's essentially correct: CBS wanted a product that they believed they could use to drive their streaming service, and they hired people to produce it. Whenever it veered too far from what they could use they overruled the folks they hired.

There's no evidence of that. You're just guessing.

According to reports, Fuller was fired because he was so late with scripts because he was working on that other show.

Star Trek belongs to CBS. CBS wants a Star Trek series to launch their streaming service. They hired Kurtzman to make one for them. He hired Fuller. Fuller was let go for holding up the train. Then they changed it all so much that the only positive thing he'll say about the show is that he liked seeing the casting of SM-G and Yeoh.

None of that is in dispute. None of it.

I'm sorry, whose name is it that you'd like to append "Vision" to this time around - you know, as in "Gene's Vision?" :guffaw:

Oh, very crying out loud. Can we stop bashing Discovery,

I'm not bashing the show. Again, what part of what I posted is in dispute? That it's a product owned by CBS that they're spending tens of millions of dollars on with the purpose of increasing their streaming subscriber base? That Fuller was let go? That he declines to speak positively of what he's seen of the show other than to praise the casting?

Do you think there's a place on TrekBBS where we won't be talking about Discovery in the next week? Hell, there are two topics devoted to it in TNZ.

There's not a shred of evidence in what you wrote or elsewhere that they "overruled the folks making it" to force their viewpoint on them. That IS disputed. In fact, quite the opposite because the showrunners have said that many of Fuller's idea remains in the show. So, nope to you buddy. You're just guessing to support your rationalization for not liking the show before it airs. :guffaw:

It's notable that you can't reference a reputable source to support your guess.

We get it. You're convinced that you won't like it. Fine. But, don't make shit up to try to support it.

I just had an ad for it on Youtube, with new scenes and telling us it's new night is Thursday. I hope that's not their idea of promoting the new night -- waiting for people accidentally see an ad on Youtube.
I saw a commercial on TV last night saying it was going to be on Thursday

Why is the Orville even being compared to Discovery? They both take place in space....the end. They're not going to be anything alike.

This is true.

Note that there are also two threads comparing The Orville to Discovery in the Discovery forum right now - there's a bit of complaining and bashing going on in both directions up there.
