News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

People who want a serious drama with dark undertones can watch Discovery and anyone who wants Star Trek-lite can watch Orville. The two can co-exist fine in that context.

For me it will be especially easy. Orville is not on a streaming service I will never sign up for. Discovery can sit and wait in a corner until it comes to Netflix US or some other service I don't have to pay extra for.
 
Well, since The Orville is moving to Thursday on the 21st I'll be watching the Discovery premiere at 8:00 PM on the 24th.

One of the virtues of having Discovery on a streaming service is that you can easily put it off until it's convenient to watch. I do like The Orville being on Hulu for re-watching, but there's a 24-hour wait after broadcast.
 
The jokes seem to be getting better. With the egg joke and the weed joke I am looking forward to the next episode, even more. Also one thing I have noticed about MacFarlane's acting is he isn't all that bad in casual situations were he is just kind of a normal guy. It's when he is in captain mode that he needs to work on it.

That's an interesting take on the scene. I just interpreted the whole "Which one's Alara? Sorry, still learning names" to be a sort of meta-reference to this being the first episode and we the audience are still in the process of learning everyone's name.

Depending on how cruel one would want to be, say everybody is in the mess hall (if they have one), and scambled eggs are served.

The cook says, "Yeah, you'll never believe where I found it. I was in the medical bay talking to Dr. Finn and I say this egg..."

BLASPHEMY!! That's like asking people to like both Star Trek and Star Wars.
 
Mercer ain't Kirk and he ain't Picard. He's a more benign and brighter version of Michael Scott - he may be cut out for command, but he sure ain't adroit with people. :lol:

I like McFarlane in this part very much. He's good at being the foil for more interesting performers in scenes, which is what Mercer seems to be about.

This is a perfectly valid interpretation. :) But still I remember all the times that the crew of the Enterprise meets for the first time some alien culture representatives.

Some alien: "Greetings! I'm the Tetragarch M'kstilch, this is the First Representative Of The Fourth Province Klast(click sound), my assistant Swawta-Upper-Lander, second assistant Migadiss-Bottom-Lander and third assistant Raiukan-Dek-Lamek".
Picard (without missing a beat): "Greetings Tetragarch M'kstilch, First Representative Of The Fourth Province Klast(click sound), assistant Swawta-Upper-Lander, second assistant Migadiss-Bottom-Lander and third assistant Raiukan-Dek-Lamek. I'm the Captain Jean-Luc Picard."

While I struggle to remember perfectly normal (and terrestrial) names when they introduce someone to me during a party or a business meeting...

I re-watched the pilot and well, I don't know if it was just me but I see some points of similarity between Orville and Star Trek: Voyager*...

- the seats of the Captain and his First Officer are side by side,
- the character of Gordon Malloy's backstory could be almost similar to Tom Paris. A nice guy ( funny & rather mocking) & brillant pilot but, who seems to have trouble with authority,

* yes, I know that Brannon Braga has worked on Voyager and now, he does on Orville. Let's hope that he will not make a "Threshold" (Voyager) à la sauce Orville! :D
 
Okay, I saw it via the nice people at Amazon - and I liked it a lot. It's pure warm, fuzzy Berman-era Trek nostalgia but with more relatable characters who don't take themselves seriously. Basically, Berman Trek without the pretentious self-importance which I always found so off-putting. Looking forward to seeing more, when Fox UK finally decide to bless us with episodes.

My Trekkie Mum liked it a lot too. She said it was like watching Next Gen for the first time.

Perfect description. Next episode looks even more so. It's fun Trek with down to earth characters.
