News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I liked it. It had flaws but everything I saw was more impressive and more like Star Trek than the actual Star Trek Discovery series so far has shown us (And I do mean just about everything feels too out of place).

Somehow they managed to reverse the roles and the real Trek series feels like a gritty fanfiction homage whereas the lighter homage of Orville feels like a refreshed Star Trek series.

Personally, I think Bortus should have been a Command Master Chief, though maybe they're intentionally making everyone an officer as a reflection of Starfleet?

He sits next to Alara and operates the console next to hers at different times in the episode. One assumes that is not simply the "2nd officer console". That station was taken over by someone else during the time when he was in command. Not sure what station that is, but it does appear that he is doing a job there other than being 2nd officer.

"Second officer" on a merchant ship is part of a relatively simple hierarchy of officers who handle the navigation and supervise the "above deck" work, and provide duty coverage around the clock. There are generally two other unrelated hierarchies: engineering and the purser's or "hotel" staff. On a warship things are much more complex

It's not a matter of complexity. A cruise ship is a complex operation of many departments, including several that a warship doesn't have, like the Casino department. Research vessels might have a survey department, which a cruise ship does not, and neither has a weapons department or division.

None of this relates to Bortus, who obviously is doing something when he's pushing those buttons at that bridge console hes manning when he's not in command, though I'm not exactly sure what that station is or what he's doing there.

How does it feel refreshed? It's obviously Seth MacFarlane geeking out and being a TNG fanboy. The Orville recreates the look and feel of early 90s Star Trek, there's nothing refreshing about it, it's pure nostalgia.

Discovery on the other hand does feel refreshed, it might not be for everyone but from the trailers it looks like a show made in 2017, it's modern and has modern sensibilities. The Orville feels like a fan production because those usually strive to recreate the look and tone of decade's old productions.

"What he means is, if you don't already drink, you should probably start." > "Wesley, I hope you never do."

The delivery alone of the former > that of the latter.

Watched 20 minutes of the first episode before yet another pee gag made me turn it off. It's total drek. Was hoping for Galaxy Quest, but got another excuse for what's loosely termed as comedy in Hollywood these days. Heck, there was more humour in divorced old Picard and Beverly in All Good Things than there is in this show's central non-couple.
