You know, that should become a running gag in the series. They should even reference it.
Ed: "Wait -- what happened to you eyebrows?"
Alara: "What?"
Ed: "I swear you had eyebrows."
It's been done...
"what hump?"

Personally, I think Bortus should have been a Command Master Chief, though maybe they're intentionally making everyone an officer as a reflection of Starfleet?
"Second officer" on a merchant ship is part of a relatively simple hierarchy of officers who handle the navigation and supervise the "above deck" work, and provide duty coverage around the clock. There are generally two other unrelated hierarchies: engineering and the purser's or "hotel" staff. On a warship things are much more complex
True, but that's why it would be funny. A nice allusion to that classic old joke. It's been done...
"what hump?"
I fucking love the Doom doors. Have to wonder how many people actually notice that.Sound effects dudes, I know it's cheep, can but can we stop using the Doom/Duke Nukem door sounds? They are pretty damn obvious.
How does it feel refreshed? It's obviously Seth MacFarlane geeking out and being a TNG fanboy. The Orville recreates the look and feel of early 90s Star Trek, there's nothing refreshing about it, it's pure nostalgia.Somehow they managed to reverse the roles and the real Trek series feels like a gritty fanfiction homage whereas the lighter homage of Orville feels like a refreshed Star Trek series.
The shuttle gets coated in an orange powder from a sudden rock slide on a planet, piloted by Alara. It lands on Orville, and when the landing party (yes, I love they are using that term!) leaves the shuttle bay, another shuttle lands, with a meaner Alara.
She can be identified by having eyebrows. I repeat. She can be identified...by...having eyebrows!
How does it feel refreshed?
Because it is fun. Nothing more, nothing less than fun space adventure. Something Star Trek on TV and others haven't been for a very, very long time.
It is the tone that is refreshing.
