News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

As a professional movie critic, I take great offense to that stereotype!

If only you'd join me one evening for a tasty, vegan snack and a cup of Tibetan Wheatgrass tea at my place, youd quickly come around and realize that the smell of my flatulence is indeed quite marvelous!

Speaking of marvelous, I just watched the most AMAZING Albanian cineplay about a plumber looking for love under the Hoxha dictatorship. Gonna give it 9/10 in tomorrow's review.

What about The Expanse and Killjoys?
I enjoy The Expanse, but it sure has a stick up its ass trying to be "realistic." It's actually pretty refreshing Orville isn't trying to bend over backwards with the realism.

Killjoys is pretty awful.
Dark Matter?
Has been cancelled.
So as far as Alara. Shouldn't a species from a planet with higher gravity be shorter and more muscular and have a higher mass?
I was wondering how long it would be before someone said that.

You know what, though? I don't care.
He was only introduced as the second officer which really isn't a thing.
Yeah, I'll admit that was odd. But given he wears command blue, my guess is that in this military service, second officer is a thing?
That would be terrible. Having a large, dedicated fan base.
As you know, large dedicated fanbases is totally not what Star Trek is about. True Star Trek isn't watched by the average person because it's too brilliant for their mind to process. This is where JJ Abrams failed.

Or something.

The joke is making fun of the trope of all communication being in videoon TNG-era Trek. Every time you contact someone, they're in a perfectly framed shot, and if anything is going on in the background, it's some convenient setup to demonstrate the setting.

Agreed. And if that's the form of communication, things like that would happen because the dog's not going to care if you're on the vid-com. I did kind of wish they'd just let it go, though, without the line calling attention to it; I was laughing already.

There is such a thing as "second officer" in the real world. Seth didn't make that up. It can be used instead of second mate as a maritime position and I know civil aviation includes it as well.

Second mate is a position. Third mate is as well, even 4th mate in some cases. You can say second or third officer as well. That's in the deck department. In engineering, you can have second engineer, 3rd engineer. He didn't do anything weird. Yes, the different mates can handle various jobs, like navigator, safety, medical, etc. But this doesn't seem like an egregious error.

We know that "second officer" exists. What we're saying is that most of the time, second officers have other jobs and responsibilities. Scotty was second officer and chief engineer. Data was second officer and ops officer. Tuvok was second officer and chief of security. Trip was second officer and chief engineer. It is very odd indeed that Bortus is second officer and has no other job.

Personally, I think Bortus should have been a Command Master Chief, though maybe they're intentionally making everyone an officer as a reflection of Starfleet?

Am I the only one who was kind of thinking, "Wesley Crusher" with Allara? She is young and really someone who would seem kind of silly to be a bridge officer because of her age. The difference is she is might be a anti-Wesley Crusher because she can kick butt were as Wesley is seen as kind of a tool. Plus you got the fact that Wesley Crusher was going to be a teenage girl in the early concepts of TNG.

I looked up vessel security officer and ship security officer jobs, qualifications and licensing and 23 years old may not be too young depending on the ship and the situation.

Unfortunately, yes. I don't mind so much here because it's a play on Star Trek, but I have a hard time watching Star Trek and not see the overabundance of officers and the sheer lack of enlisted personnel, when the ratio should be the other way around.

But it has to be Wesley Crusher. She doesn't seen to be based on any other Trek template I can think of. I guess you could stretch and say Tasha Yar but that doesn't really seem to fit. Maybe Ro Lauren. That seems a little more possible but Wesley still seems more likely to me.

Jason

What "template" are Malloy and Lamar and Grayson based on? Bortus may look and sound a bit like Worf but he is not a similar character at all.

They're not doing parodies of Trek characters.

Maybe not exact characters except for the Worf guy and maybe the robot as a Data version. The friendship between pilot and helmsmen I think are kind of connected to Data and Geordi in season 1 and the Doctor is kind of Beverly Crusher. Also we know the captain,ex-wife first officer and Malloy(the pilot?" have a history together so I think it might actually be the main focus of the show so you might be seeing a kind of Kirk/Spock/McCoy trio become the center of the show.

Also it's possible that single characters might take on certain traits of different characters and kind of combine them into a single character. Thats why I think Allura might be a mix of Wesley Crusher and Ro Lauren.

I'd give real money if an evil alien commander was threatening the crew on the viewscreen in a future episode and his kids busted in like this, showing that he's just been sitting at home the whole time. Add the mother coming in to grab them with some tentacles or something and that's golden.

Heh, I was actually thinking about this video but didn't want to link anything as there seems to be a theme of "don't be a bot" measures aimed at new registrants (completely understandable).

I hope they keep doing these visual meta-gags whenever there's a talking head on the viewscreen. They need to point it out every time, but it was probably a good idea to do so in the pilot so people learn to pay attention to these details.
