News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

it's more than that. GQ was a satire on Star Trek. It featured a lot of the same elements that Trek has. It had a star ship, a crew that looked a lot of a Trek crew, even having a Kirk and a Spock like character. It featured a transporter malfunction, red shirts etc...
I'd just call it a star trek parody. GQ did it first and the best, but plotwise this aint it.

But what about pointed sticks?

Looking good! DSC needs to reinvent Trek to keep it fresh, but this series can bring us all the 90s Trek love + Galaxy Quest. Looking forward to it!

Rip everything not bolted down from Red Dwarf and/or Galaxy Quest and it should be interesting. If it's anything like McFarlane's current TV fare though it'll be trash.

The bad thing (I guess?) will be if it ends up more well-regarded than Discovery. There are a lot of people that put Galaxy Quest at second or third on their list of the best Trek movies.

I'm excited for it. I see no harm in having this show and Discovery.

Now that we got a trailer for both shows to compare, I think having both shows will be fantastic. The shows cater to different types. If you want fun, campy star trek, you got The Orville and if you want exciting, edgy, serious star trek, you got Discovery. It's a win-win.

That's I feel about it too. I think you can have both.

So, we showed this trailer at our astronomy club meeting tonight and it was a big hit. It got a lot of laughs and everyone in the room is now looking forward to it.

Anyone think this looks better than Star Trek: Discovery?
As far as the look is concerned, based on what we've been shown in the trailers? No, not me.

As far as whether the show will be better? Much harder to say, you know, having not seen a single episode of either.

Anyone think this looks better than Star Trek: Discovery?
No, because I recall the design aesthetic of the 1990s going out of style several decades ago. They work in a sci-fi comedy lampooning shows like Star Trek, but actual Star Trek? No, I prefer the show be taken a little more seriously than that, just as I prefer modern visuals be incorporated into modern Star Trek. I guess we could keep the tan walls and carpet, along with the red, yellow, and blue spandex, though. Just my two bits.

It looks fantastic-- this is what Trek should look like. I'm not sure if the humor will be my cup of tea, but I'll definitely check it out.

Peter David actaully thinks Seth macfarlane read his crappy new frontier books

The part I like the most is that the ship’s captain (MacFarlane) has, as his first officer, his ex. All I could think of is, Wow, I wish I had thought of that twenty years ago when I created the crew for the Excalibur in “New Frontier.” Would that I had made Calhoun’s first officer his ex.

Oh. Wait.
