News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

All Networks "like" to cancel things. Or is it FOX likes to cancel things we like?
I am biased. I love Firefly, and I think Fox was beyond stupid for canceling a show that hadn't even had its chance to get off the ground. I despise how most networks work these days, throwing everything at the wall, and then just peeling it all off before it has a chance to stick. If TNG had been made today, it wouldn't have made it out of the first season alive. I just don't like those practices, never have.

It's good to live in the age of streaming and cable.

I can't see how this show is going to work for long. OK, so what we're looking at is a 'Galaxy Quest' style TV series. Right?
That might sound funny in principle, but there are only so many sci-fi conceits you can send up and spoof. What's going to happen then? Without some proper stories and characterisation I can imagine 'The Orville' getting very tired, very quickly.
Futurama got 7 seasons and 140 episodes out of spoofing sci-fi conceits, so it is possible to do it.

That's a matter of opinion. I stopped finding Futurama funny after the first 5 minutes.
Your loss. It remains one of my favorite shows. But, like you said, matter of opinion.

Likewise, so did Eureka with five seasons and 77 episodes.

Yes, in the before time.
Indeed. Also, I'm aware Firefly will never happen again. I mean, the people are still around (except for Ron Glass, and since Shepherd Book was one of my favorite characters, that hurts), but I'm not sure they'd all get together to do the series, one, and two, I think that while there are dedicated fans like myself, the general reception to the show would probably be lukewarm at best. I don't pretend the stuff I love is also loved worldwide.

Fox doesn't cancel everything like it used to. It gave us another season of Sleepy Hollow, despite cancellation-justifying ratings.

Hmm... Oh, I just realized. I must go home. For sleep.

*slowly backs away*
*reaches desk*
*slides hand under desk drawer*
*removes Firefly spec script*
*slowly walks to door*
*exits door*
*squeal of tires heard in parking lot*
*silence*
*Jet engine heard fading into distance*

I think that a Firefly reboot is certainly plausible; considering that it's surged in popularity since being cancelled and all the new scifi shows, it's definitely time. What could make or break it would be Joss Wheden willing to tackle the project and a studio (does Fox still have the rights?) willing to give creative freedom to the showrunners.
I can imagine one or two of the original actors coming back for a cameo here and there, but to work it's got to be a new show with a new cast.

A Firefly reunion show is doomed to failure.

I don't know. Part of the reason Firefly worked is because of the actors themselves. I would give a new show with a new cast/crew a shot, but I'd still be missing the original gang of heathens.

Yeah certainly this particular cast had great chemistry, part of that was great material they had to work with and part of that was just skill.
Nathan Fillion is the best Mal Reynolds, but that doesn't mean someone like Joe Flannigan couldn't be a great Reynolds. Or Avery Brooks couldn't be another Book.
Yeah for sure i'd miss the original crew, but i just don't see the actors agreeing to come back.

Nathan's already on board. He said he would take the role again in a heartbeat. Same goes for Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, and Jewel Staite. Adam Baldwin would love to get back on board if Joss were to step up and make the offer, as would Sean Maher. The only ones I'm not sure of would be Summer Glau, and Morena Baccarin, though both still express fondness for the show, and have talked about a return. Honestly, it really could go either way.

And we'd have to pretend Serenity never happened? Or go to between the when the series was cancelled and the film?
